In Charge (available here)
is a Fanfic about Subnautica by Fanfic creator "coincidencless". It follows the same basic story as the game but adds in many new things and characters.
In Charge contains examples of the following tropes:
- Adaptational Alternate Ending: Instead of leaving the planet and going back to a trillion dollars of debt, Varien decides to stay with his friends and send the rocket to the Mongolians so that they would protect the planet from Alterra.
- Adaptational Badass: Ampeels. An Ampeel would not be able to kill a Reaper Leviathan in the base game, even at the cost of nearly dying themselves.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Ampeels fit this, going from merely being implied to be more intelligent than other sea creatures to outright sapient. And this becomes integral to the plot.
- A God I Am Not: After seeing all that Varien can do with technology, Volara asks him if he's a god. He hastily replies that no, he isn't, he just has Sufficiently Advanced Technology.
- Horrifying the Horror: Crabsquids don't like the prospect of getting zapped by the Ampeels.
- Humans Through Alien Eyes: We often switch to the point of view of Volara the Ampeel. Notably, she at first has trouble understanding that humans are not the vehicles they drive, since she at first believes Varien is his Seamoth.
- Mercy Kill: Near the start of the fanfic, Volara kills a drowning survivor to end their suffering. Ultimately Played for Drama when Varien learns it was his fiancée.
- Starfish Language: The electrical arcs seen in the game around Ampeel prongs are more than just a means of defense in this fic, they're how they talk to each other. One of the Ampeels, having a broken prong, is rendered as having a lisp, replacing all her S's with L's.
- Wound That Will Not Heal: When Ohmaron attacks Varien, the electrical charge makes him unable to move his hand. He has use of it still, but it locks up from time to time. It is left ambiguous if it will ever heal or not.
