In Brightest Day: The Second Front is a side-story to In Brightest Day.
The evil of Nightmare Moon's Blackest Night cannot be contained, seeping into another realm and bringing about darkness and death.
Sunset Shimmer, having self-exiled herself to an alternate universe inhabited by human counterparts of her homeworld, must take up the power of the Emotional Spectrum, move past her own personal issues, and mend the bonds she has broken in this world in order to bring about a team capable of defending it.

This story contains examples of:
- Anti-Villain: Sunset after she gets her Red Ring. She hates the Black Lanterns, but she plans to use the Ring's power to dominate the world and eventually Equestria. The only thing stopping her is the Green Guardian (and later the Azure Knight).
- Ax-Crazy:
- Pinkameana after becoming a Yellow Lantern.
- Rarity falls into this category after she becomes an Orange Lantern (AKA "Diamante Elegante"). Due to the nature of her ring, the more objects she manages to obtain, the crazier she seems to get.
- Badass Creed: Like in the original story, anyone with a ring has one and changes it to their liking:

- Sunset comes to Scootaloo's rescue before a Black Lantern can kill her.
- The Azure Knight comes to Sunset and the Green Guardian's aid when facing off against Diamante Elegante.
- Everyone Has Standards: Sunset may be a jerk and a bully, but she'd never leave someone to die, as shown when she saves Scootaloo from a collapsing building and a Black Lantern.
- This comes into play again when all four Lanterns are battling in a theme park and their scuffle ends up nearly knocking over a ferris wheel, pretty much everyone (even their opponent Diamante Elegante) stops what they're doing to prevent it from collapsing.
- Failed a Spot Check / Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Twilight, unaware of the Mirror being a portal, accidentally lets the Black Ring pass through, causing major problems for Earth.
- Foreshadowing: The Orange Lantern refers to herself as "Diamante Elegante", those who are familiar with the IDW comics should know that this is the exact same alias Rarity used during a wrestling match (issue #29 to be exact).
- Mysterious Stranger:
- The Green Guardian. Exactly who she is has yet to be revealed, only that she wields the Green Lantern Ring and seems to know Sunset very well.
- The Azure Knight falls into this category as well, all that's known about her personally is that she seems to be good friends with the Green Guardian.
- Parental Neglect: Shown to be the reason why Sunset is the way she is; Sunburst was her older and more talented brother who got all their parents' praise, while all Sunset got was "we expected nothing less" or "Sunburst did it better"... until eventually she snapped and cut off all ties to her family after she became Celestia's student. Upon arriving in the Human world, Sunset almost immediately ran into her Human family, who were desperately searching for her, hoping to make up for their mistakes. Sunset discovered that a similar scenario happened resulting in her counterpart running away and decided to use this development to her advantage, taking her human self's place.
- Ship Tease:
- Flash Sentry and Twilight Sparkle slowly become closer after meeting each other.
- Adagio becomes infatuated with Sunset's Crimson Dragon alias.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: After nearly getting killed by a Black Lantern and bleeding out from her injuries, Scootaloo goes through this. As a result, she can't remember that it was Sunset who saved her life.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: While we know that Sunset's Human counterpart ran away from home sometime prior to her arrival, her ultimate fate remains unknown.
