This story is an AlternateUniverseFic retelling of ''Evangelion'', starting with one major difference: [[ForWantOfANail what if Shinji was sent to live with and be raised by his uncle instead of his teacher?]] The end result is a more confident Shinji who doesn't take crap from anyone so easily. Things change very radically as time goes on, sort of in a reverse ButterflyOfDoom. However, this change did not come out of nowhere, as there is someone who caused this change for the better.

* ForWantOfANail: Due to [[spoiler:the previous timeline's Rei meddling]], Gendo sends Shinji to live with Yui's brother, where he grows up in a far more supportive and caring environment that makes him a lot less of an ExtremeDoormat. Other changes in the timeline include:
** Shinji shows concern for Rei right way instead of staying at a distance, which arouses Rei's curiosity.
** Due to Shinji managing to get Misato to stop drinking, Misato, in turn, becomes noticeably sharper and more secure in her emotions, with no more alcohol clouding her judgement.
** Given their falling out following their first battle against Israfel, Rei takes Asuka's place as Shinji's partner. It furthers their relationship instead of Asuka getting disgusted as per canon.
** Instead of being pumped with coolant, Sandalphon is dunked into the lake with EVA Unit-02, where the sudden pressure difference causes him balloon him up to explode after being stabbed, and by extension Shinji doesn't have to descend into the lava to save Asuka, which would've in turn bruised her ego.
** During the fight against Leilel, Asuka, rather than Shinji, is sucked into the Dirac Sea, where she is given [[YetAnotherChristmasCarol the Christmas Carol]] treatment from The Devil, which leads to her becoming a better person.
** Bardiel possesses Trident, rather than Toji's Unit-03.

** Instead of Asuka being on the receiving end of Arael's MindRape, Toji and Hikari are the unlucky victims. And unlike Canon!Asuka, the two get better (and closer than before).
** Armisael is destroyed by the Pilots and Mana without Rei having to destroy Unit-00, herself, and most of Tokyo-3 with her.
** Because Shinji already has Rei, Kaworu approaches Asuka (who is moping since nearly everybody else in her life is either paired with someone, or have no problems with love) instead of him. And because of the changes in NERV's commanders, without Asuka in a HeroicBSOD, SEELE cannot send him there as a substitute EVA pilot.
** Instead of dying by Unit-01's hands, Kaworu dies [[spoiler:by Lilith taking his powers, and he passes away in a hospital bed]] after explaining the Angels' history as well as SEELE's plans to instigate the Third Impact.
** Gendo Ikari takes Misato's place in saving the Pilots from SEELE's gunmen.
** After [[spoiler:Canon!Rei]] warns Rei of how Third Impact will occur, Rei destroys one of the MP-EVAS, bringing that scheme to a halt.

** In the aftermath of Arael's MindRape, Shinji and his friends take Toji and Hikari to a Shinto temple, which is run by a head priest named [[Franchise/SailorMoon Hino, who has a granddaughter named]] [[NamesTheSame Rei]]. Said granddaughter later appears in [[spoiler:Ryoji and Misato's wedding]].

* ArmorPiercingSlap: Rei hands these out to whoever pisses her off. Shinji gets one, as does Asuka and even [[spoiler: Gendo, after Rei went through character development]]. Asuka herself also gets in on the fun.

* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Certainly goes for Misato and Kaji, with Misato being vocal enough that Asuka demands soundproofing so she could get her needed sleep.
** Shinji and Rei as well, though they are understandably inexperienced and are still learning.

* NearDeathExperience: While being strangled by a SEELE guard, Misato gets one of these and is visited by her dead father in {{Limbo}}, where they come to terms with each other's and their own issues.

After that, [[AddictionDisplacement she switches]] to [[MustHaveCaffeine coffee]], which still is healthier. Ritsuko on the other hand is not as easily swayed by Shinji from her smoking habit, saying she'll consider quitting once the Angels are defeated. In her eyes, if the Angels kill them all, then it won't matter, so until they're defeated she's hanging on to one of the things that helps calm her down.

* RealityEnsues: Happens quite a lot, especially to deconstruct the canon story.
** Gendo makes sure to step onto the military's toes whenever possible, just to piss them off, feeling untouchable because he knows they need him. Surprise-surprise, when circumstances arise that cause things to change drastically, Gendo's a ''person non grata'' and can count himself lucky that he wasn't executed or otherwise given a hard time. It also makes relations between NERV and the military unnecessarily difficult.
** Gendo really shouldn't have been surprised that abandoning his four-year-old son and leaving the boy in the care of some relatives right after a tragic loss has resulted in his son resenting and generally deeply distrusting of him.
** Even a heavily conditioned person ''will'' start to change and get ideas of their own if left unsupervised for most of the time. It's no surprise that Rei's behaviors shift more with the right outside stimuli.
** It's not easy to get dry after years of drinking heavily. Misato suffers from some nasty withdrawal symptoms and has to ask Ritsuko for meds that help her in the process.
** It's impossible to block off ''all'' media from learning of the whole Angel thing, especially since these things are so damn huge. Ramiel is the final nail in the coffin, leaving behind a massive corpse that can't be hidden. From then on, NERV has to deal with the media as well.
** The aftermath of Gaghiel's attack is shown. Of course, there are many deaths.
** While in canon, NERV seemed to have the power to simply draft children into service, here it's much more complicated:
*** Since Gendo no longer is Shinji's legal guardian, Shinji could quit at any time. That ensures that Gendo keeps his distance, [[spoiler: at least until he thought the moment was good to teach Shinji his place]].
*** Toji and Hikari need the OK of their parents to pilot, and since they are minors, their parents could also pull them from service. That again prevents NERV from pulling any dick moves on them.
*** Only Rei and Asuka have no choice in the matter and no one who could do it for them.
** Ritsuko's habit of making the female plugsuits so tight and form-fitting blows up in her face two times, when the girls in question are not amused at all. There, after all, is only so much a teenage girl can accept before their sense of modesty kicks in.
** The "naked test" is played as exactly as humiliating, embarrassing and physically exhausting as one would imagine - especially in light of the long decontamination procedure. Of course, the pilots are angry as well that this got dumped onto them out of nowhere and they make Misato feel their displeasure.
** No one can do a 180° turn on who they are. Asuka realizes that the road to redemption is hard and it takes baby steps to slowly improve her behavior. Many, of course, do not believe she is serious about changing and don't forgive her. Even the other pilots take a considerable amount time before fully forgiving Asuka's past behavior.

* BiTheWay: Despite having flirted with Kaji as well as having feelings for Gendo until she realizes he was just using her, Ritsuko actually doesn't mind when Maya [[SempaiKohai confesses her feelings to her]]. Averted in that the change is gradual and Ritsuko needs time to come to terms with it.
