Danganronpa R1 by Mirai Moon is a Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Alternate Universe Fic. Fifteen students all wake up at Hope's Peak Academy with not only no idea how they got there, but also no idea what the Ultimate Talent they were selected for. Then everything changes once Makoto Naegi is killed.

A sequel, Danganronpa R2, is currently in the works.

This fanfiction assumes the reader has completed the original game. Thus, all spoilers for the game will be unmarked.

Danganronpa R1 provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: According to Monokuma, Byakuya ran away from the Togami family at a young age and joined Fenrir (ironically, he was threatened by his father to be sent to Fenrir should he fail as an heir). There he became a prominent soldier alongside Mukuro, even forming a close relationship with her. This was enough that Hope's Peak accepted both of them as the Ultimate Knife Fighter and the Ultimate Markswoman respectively. However, it turns out to be false when it is revealed they weren't the original Byakuya or Mukuro.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The identity of the Mastermind of the Killing Game, Even after the others escaped. A prevailing theory in the Future Foundation is that it was committed by one of the Remnants of Despair.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: Once the students realize they aren't the real Class 78, many of them recall traits of their old personalities.
    • In the final chapter, "Sayaka" picks up a bow to help "Mondo" and "Leon" fight against an unknown attacker, a talent she knows the real Sayaka Maizono does not have.
    • "Celeste" lampshades that while the real Celeste/Taeko would not be worried about the fate of her classmates, she herself knows that going out to search for them is the right thing.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The surviving students make it out of Hope's Peak. However, during their escape from the Monokuma army, "Sayaka" and "Hifumi" are injured and separated from the others. Thankfully they were rescued by the future, but the rest of their group("Leon", "Mondo", "Chihiro", and "Celeste" are left behind in the despair-ruled world) are left behind, but a brief Hope Spot at the end shows them approaching a Future Foundation helicopter. They also learn they can't have their memories of their true identities restored without losing what memories they've made during their Killing School Life.
  • The Cameo:
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Makoto, Byakuya, Aoi, Toko, Yasuhiro, and Kyoko are either killed or executed as of chapter 4.
    • Sakura is executed as a Blackened during Chapter 1, three chapters earlier than her death in canon.
    • All subverted when it was revealed the cast wasn't the original
  • Decoy Protagonist: Makoto Naegi is the initial point of view for the first chapter before his death. After that, Sayaka Maizono becomes the new protagonist.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: After finding the bodies of the original Class 78 that were either killed or executed, Mondo guesses the survivors were the original Makoto, Kyoko, Byakuya, Aoi, Yasuhiro, Toko, and Mondo. He has no way of knowing that the original Mondo was executed by having his body dissolved.
  • Everyone Knows Morse: Mukuro uses Morse Code to signal that she knows Makoto's killer. Among those that were interrogating her, only Toko understood, but she was too nervous to speak up until the middle of the trial
  • Idiot Hair: The character picture for Sayaka has her with an ahoge, fitting one of Danganronpa's protagonist trope.
  • Internal Reveal: "Celeste" greets her real counterpart's corpse by the latter's real name, Taeko.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: None of the students can remember what Talent they were accepted for. Though the truth is that their memories of who they are were changed...
  • Mythology Gag: Byakuya's sister Shinobu Togami, also known as the "Ultimate Secretary," is found by Sayaka in a yearbook.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Makoto tries to block the door of the A/V room from the inside to prevent the others from seeing a clip show of their loved ones being murdered. Fearing the worse, Mondo and Sakura attempt to break in to save him, with Sakura kicking the door open. But the force was too strong, and caused a head injury to Makoto that lead to him to bleed to death hours later, leaving Sakura as the unintended Blackened.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite her calm exterior, Kyoko is paranoid because of her memories being tampered, keeping her from trusting the other classmates. She loses her cool more so when discovering that she and her "classmates" may actually have their identities faked.
  • The Reveal: The students in the R1 killing game aren't the actual canon characters. Instead, they are a group of 15 teenagers who had their memories altered to think they are talented students.
  • Sadistic Choice: To keep Mukuro from revealing everything about the Killing Game, Monokuma looks her in an air-tight glass chamber with only a few days of air. But he also offers the other students a chance to let her free, by sacrificing another student to take her place.
  • Spanner in the Works: Byakuya attempted to free Mukuro from her glass prison with a custom bomb. He did not foresee Asahina throwing in a grenade that increased the explosion and killed him in the process.
  • Spared By Adaptation:
    • Sayaka, Leon, Chihiro, Mondo, Hifumi, and Celeste make it to the end of chapter 4.
    • Mukuro avoids being impaled by the Spear of Gungmir, but is killed in the next chapter by Aoi.
    • All subverted when it was revealed the cast wasn't the original.
  • Spotting the Thread: Kyoko placed a sticker on Monokuma's body, which remained until the night before Kiyotaka's murder and remained unknown to the Mastermind. After finding the discarded ear with the said sticker, she deduces that Monokuma was attacked and had his body replaced, yet he did not punish the student who was responsible.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: The Second Trial has both Leon and Aoi suspect for the double murder of Byakuya and Mukuro. Leon is seen as the main suspect since he had access to the incinerator to test the bomb. However, Sayaka points out that since he had the incinerator, he could have used it to destroy Byakuya's severed hand instead of hiding it in a box.
  • Taking the Heat: Toko is punished as the Blackened for Kiyotaka's murder. In truth, she accepted the fall so that she be punished for Genocider Jack's murders and the others have a better chance to get free.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist:
    • Aoi believed that the mercenary group Fenrir were responsible for trapping them in the school. After learning that Mukuro and Byakuya were members, she has them killed in hopes of ending the game and tries to silence Leon after he sees them before Monokuma captures them both.
    • As part of her ploy to help the others escape, Kyoko killed Kiyotaka, then used the lack of camera's in the pool area to make sure the willing Toko was viewed as the Blackened by both the other students and the mastermind.
  • Wham Shot: The survivors discovering the decayed bodies of the original dead from Class 78.
  • Wham Line:
    • After Mukuro avoids being impaled by the Spear and Gungir and demands Junko explains what's happening.
      Monokuma: Junko Enoshima is dead!"
    • At the end of the third trial.
Kyoko: Now then, Monokuma, I believe you just broke one of your own rules.
    • The message that Chihiro manages to isolate and play through the announcement channel.
Unknown: I just need some final pieces...

Danganronpa R2 contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: Korekiyo was an informant for Kokichi and D.I.C.E. in the past before the Ultimate Academy, though they never got along.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In Chapter 2, the body discovered was thought to be Korekiyo. Instead, it was Shuichi disguised as him.
  • Big Damn Hero: In Chapter 3, Kaito arrives in time to rescue Kaede from being killed by Korekiyo. However, the amount he pushed himself causes him to be out for 22 hours.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • K1-BO has been dismantled by an unknown party.
    • Tsumugi is now the first victim of chapter 1. However, it is later revealed to be Kirumi.
    • Shuichi is killed in the second chapter, while the Blackened turns out to be Miu.
  • Faking the Dead: In the third chapter, it is revealed that Tsumugi had disguised herself as Kirumi and vice-versa for the Ultimate Maid, then sent the later to die fighting Ryoma.
  • Wham Line: One in chapter 3, when Monokuma revealed the events of the trial currently going on while Kaito was asleep for 22 hours.
Monokuma: (To Kaito) That's the kicker. You see, you're actually the star of the show, Mr. Blackened!
