Fanfic / A home away from home

Go To

A home away from home is a My Hero Academia and Avatar: The Last Airbender Crossover.

This fic is basically the culmination of all the Zuko and Shouto memes and similarities all mixed really well together. It also deals with a lot of worldbuilding and politics in the Fire Nation.

Zuko really wants to fix the spirit problem with Aang, but that's kind of hard to do when he keeps getting sucked into another world with not-bending and weirdly concerned adults.

Todoroki wants to be a hero. He did not sign up to rule a country. No, your actual ruler being missing is not an excuse.

Or - Chaos in the form of two of my favorite boys and world-switch shenanigans.

Can be found here.

A home away from home provides examples of:

  • Assassination Attempt: Zuko recognizes that it's entirely possible that his cousin Lu Ten's death on the front lines was orchestrated by Ozai while Iroh was still crown prince in order to create a Succession Crisis in an attempt to take the throne for himself. But since he never confirmed it with Iroh he can't say for sure.
  • Badass Normal: Zuko takes issue with this when he notices Class 1-A relies too much on their Quirks and doesn't think much of people without powers. He takes this as a grave insult to that philosophy thanks to his friends who are some of the most dangerous warriors he had the honor of meeting. He's right considering Sokka is a genius strategist and swordsman, Ty Lee who's a chi blocking master, Suki's a Ninja who has trained many years in the art of stealth, and Mai, who can wield and throw knives better than trained archers. Thankfully, he gave them a reality check and showed them exactly how wrong they were when he gave Bakugou a much-needed beat down during a hand-to-hand combat spar.
Zuko: I have friends with no powers at all except for the power of their body and mind, and in a one on one fight? They could kick my butt in a spar, easy. Ty Lee can poke you in five or six nerve clusters and you’ll be paralyzed. Mai is more accurate with knives than many bowmen can ever be. Sokka mastered the sword faster than anyone I know and forged his own from a fallen star. Suki and her warriors, whether or not they have their weapons, are a force unto themselves. Any one of them —all of them— have saved my life more times than I care to count.
  • Birds of a Feather: The entire reason this fic even exists in the first place is because of the staggering similarities between Zuko and Todoroki. They both can wield fire, have intense daddy issues and complicated family dynamics, has unstable siblings who shoots blue fire with an antagonistic relationship that comes with it. They even have the matching scars on the left side of their heads.
  • Ceiling Cling: Zuko shows Class A some stealth tricks he's capable of after Hagakure asked for an example and the first trick he decided to show them ended with him clinging to the upper corner of the wall like a monkey. It would be a huge Understatement to say they were impressed.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Zuko, whose only a teenager, took up the throne 2 weeks prior to the events in the story much to the concern and disbelief of the staff at UA. Poor Todoroki just can't seem to comprehend how everyone seems to be totally okay with a teenager ruling their Nation. His confusion deepens, even more, when he's forced to be a temporary substitute for Zuko because literally no one else, who doesn't want to restart the war all over again, is available for the task.
  • Child Soldiers: ...Yeah, it should come to no one's surprise when the teachers and Todoroki, in particular, are horrified to find out that a group of teenagers and children participated and helped end the 100-year war in their world.
    • Special notice should go to the 107th regiment, who Todoroki later discovers to his absolute horror and disgust are entirely made up of children.
  • Fantastic Racism: Unfortunately, there's a lot of that going around in the Four Nations thanks to global genocide the Fire Nation almost gotten away with during the 100-year war. Something that Todoroki acknowledges and admires about Zuko for keeping up with the pressure of the other Nations hating them for all the misery, death, and destruction the war caused them and yet somehow keeping the peace between them.
  • The Multiverse: Given that Zuko has experience with the Avatar - and thus, the Spirit World - he's able to deduce fairly quickly that he's not in his own world.
  • Parrot Exposition: In this case, it's to establish that Zuko threw out some pretty horrifying details of his life, such as the multiple murder attempts in his own family or his history as a child soldier. Zuko gets sick of it very quickly.
  • Succession Crisis: The Fire Nation almost had this as a serious problem when Zuko up and vanished to another world. The Fire Nation's only choice for succession is the royal family, the majority of who is evil and would desire to start up the world war all over again. Thankfully, the Gaang avoids this issue altogether and uses Todoroki as a stand-in for Zuko. According to them Zuko is actually studying under the sun god in the spirit world and sent Todoroki, who's a spirit as far as the public knows and rules over them without complaint.
