Jack West, polymath genius, Olympic-level athlete, and Public Enemy #1, makes his way to Equestria during a mishap with a teleportation experiment. Seeing the world as a chance to start over and resolve some Not Evil, Just Misunderstood-related angst, he resolves to move beyond his past and use his amazing skills and arsenal of technology to be a hero.

- The Bad Guy Wins: This is a regular part of Jack's backstory, and still applies if you consider him the "bad guy".
- Berserk Button: Don't screw with Rainbow Dash's friends. Or Jack's, for that matter.
- Brand X: Averted almost flagrantly; Jack's weapons, cars and technology are all based in the real world (and, between Walther P99s and Aston Martins, frequently Shout-Out to James Bond). Even Jack's musical taste is real: it includes Lacuna Coil, Lecrae and Red among others.
- Breaking Speech: More than a few in the second story; it's centered around Discord, so what'd you expect?
- Crossover: Of the massive variety in Lord and Master: Nightmare Dash even provided an appendix immediately after to explain things to non-Whovians.
- Deconstruction Fic: Regarding Mare-Do-Well. Turning Trix would also deconstruct the real danger behind even comedic enemies like Trixie.
- Despair Event Horizon: Rainbow Dash hits hers early on, but comes back.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: According to
Word of God. According to Nightmare Dash, the story has been going on for so long, the earlier chapters no longer reflect his writing skill, and he has considered rewriting them entirely. Especially true of the first chapter, which is a massive backstory dump about the protagonist. - Even Evil Has Standards: Jack West; this is implied to be one of the factors that drives his Heel–Face Turn.

Growing the Beard: According to Word of God, Turning Trix is this. In addition to a more fluid and descriptive style, it also marked the end of subdivided stories; every one since then has been released as a single chapter. - Heel–Face Revolving Door: Jack has been through it, and how. Let's see: he starts as evil, but with standards, then has a turn as a good guy, only to appear to backslide in his fight against Trixie, be possessed by the Master (and later, Sunset Shimmer), go off the moral deep end in his plot to defeat Tirek, and be corrupted by the Alicorn Amulet on his second trip to Canterlot High. You kinda have to feel sorry for the guy.
- Heel–Face Turn: Jack is trying to do this, but (according to his backstory) has quite a bit of heel to turn from.
- Hero Antagonist: Technically, in the first story.
- Musical Episode: Dazzled.
- The Only Way They Will Learn: Part of the original Mare-Do-Well story, results are subverted by deconstruction.
- Out-Gambitted: Jack pulls this on Discord in the climax of A Chaotic New World.
- Redemption Quest: Long-term, though later chapters would downplay this.
- We Used to Be Friends: Between Rainbow Dash and the rest of the Mane 6, then fixed as part of the Mare-Do-Well arc.
- Villain Protagonist: Initially, and still true depending on your opinion of Jack West, especially considering his more recent moral zig-zags.
- Villain Song: Averted by name in Lord and Master, only to be a key part of Musical Episode Dazzled. In addition to the Dazzling's existing repertoire, an increasingly edgy and threatening Jack turns "I Don't Care" by Fall Out Boy, "Seven Seas of Rhye" by Queen, and "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd into villain songs (the latter even referencing its violent use in Kingsman: The Secret Service). Bits and pieces of Alive! appear in both chapters as well, though never in full.
