Throughout the entire series, it also suffer from this during earlier installments.

    Gran Turismo 1
  • It only has cars from Japan, the USA, and UK, and from the two Western countries, there are only two brands from each: Chevrolet and Dodge for the US, and Aston Martin and TVR for the UK.
  • It does not have TCS and ASM functions, which makes driving FR and MR cars a huge chore as they spin out quickly, which makes the FR Challenge and UK vs USnote  events extremely difficult to win.
  • The car garage limit is 100.
  • The variety is lacking, there are no Group C LMP cars, DTM cars, pickup trucks, SUV trucks or even joke cars to make the fun of it.
  • The prize cars in license tests can only be obtained by getting gold. 4 fixes this by adding Bronze and Silver prize cars.
  • All of the race events (aside from the endurance races) are in championship format, in contrast to the later games which have a mix of single races and championships.
  • All of the tracks are fictional; all other mainline installments feature at least one real life track, starting with Laguna Seca in 2.

    Gran Turismo 2
  • TCS and ASM are available, but can be purchased for 50,000cr each, unlike later games that are automatically applied.
  • The restrictions of the cars are In Name Only except for drivetrain-related events. The only restriction that applies for events is the horsepower limit. You can enter a powerful car like the GT40 or a Nissan R390 GT1 Road Car in the Station Wagon Cup, in which the horsepower limit is 394HP and you can breeze through it. Or in country based events you can use the latter Japanese car in American Nationals.
  • Even for a game that contains 650 cars, you're limited to only 100 cars.
  • McLaren, Ferrari and Lamborghini were not present in this game. The former appears on the American boxart which displays a McLaren F1's dashboard, while the latter two only appeared in the game's files, but not in the actual game
  • Car descriptions in English versions of the game (especially the UK English version, which had a Top Gear (UK) writer write them) could be rather snarky compared to later games' descriptions.

    Gran Turismo 3
  • Porsche was mean to be appeared in the game but it was discarded due to Electronic Arts' deal with said manufacturer which prohibits the appearance of Porsche cars in non-EA racing games and instead they use RUF as the Porsche copycats. In fact, there's a Porsche 911 GT3 (996) that can be only obtained with cheat devices.
  • Due to the Nissan 350Z not entering production until 2002, the 2000 Nissan Z Concept, the concept car which introduced its design to the world, is featured instead. The Z Concept is one of the only cars in 3 to have not been ported to 4 onwards.

    Gran Turismo 4
  • The cockpit view wasn't introduced, although it can be activated with cheat devices.
  • Even through there are 24-hour races, it don't have any real time weather or day/night cycle.
  • Replay mode can only be forward without rewind or skipping to sections.
  • Photo Mode in replay mode can only be accessed in Replay Theater after saving a replay file from the race.

    Gran Turismo PSP
  • Due to the Development Hell of this port, the career mode was stripped out in favor of single races, driving challenges, and adhoc multiplayer. Despite the game size, the online mode was also completely omitted.
  • Car dealership is limited to four manufacturers and are randomly shuffled after exiting two races or challenges.
  • Purchased cars cannot be sold or removed, however it can only be traded with another player.
  • Tunings is limited to changing tyre types in single races and few more options in the time trial and drift mode.

    Gran Turismo 5/6
  • While the game introduces cockpit view, only Premium cars contained interiors, which means only a selection of 200+ cars have them while the Standard cars lack any detailed interior view (save for open top cars) considering the fact that Standard cars are just direct ports from the previous game. This is also present in 6 only with upscaled textures to match with the PS3 architecture.
  • While the customization is improved from the previous game, only Detailed/Premium cars have full customization: Bumpers, side skirts, spoilers and carbon hoods can be applied while with Standard cars, only spoilers can be applied.
    • The former games have limited options for pre-built spoilers and rims, and some customizations can only applied to the base models. Most vehicles can only be painted with acquired paint chips.

    Gran Turismo Sport
  • While liveries are introduced the game, the game lacked body customization. Thankfully, they brought back in 7 along with several new modifications such as widebody kits, tow hitches and license plates.
