The Wolf of Argencaster is a low-magic, high-fantasy story that takes many elements from the High Middle Ages.

The Wolf of Argencaster contains examples of:

The Upper Crass: Subverted. Rural nobility who function as a warrior class are portrayed positively, with most just being average people trying to protect their lands and feed their families. Sasassya could even be considered one of these. However, the chic, urban-dwelling nobles are portrayed far more mockingly. Particularly by Briar.

"There's aristocrats in Genohal." Briar said derisively, shooting a glare in the loose direct of the city. Silence fell as Sasassya gave her a pointed look, but the knight just shook her head. "You are a noble. There's differences. Usually pronounced 'honor' or 'usefulness' or 'having a job'."

Character-specific tropes:

     Briarden Laoch
A young knight, Brair is bold and cheerful even when, as Salassya puts it, she has absolutely no right to be. She can come across unwise and naive, but has years of solid experience under her belt and is aware of the severity of the pair's situation.
  • Big Eater: Knights are known for their hunger, and Brairden is no exception. She can easily eat several
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Briar doesn't seem to consider herself one of the saviors of the continent and/or world, more as the hero's protector. She falls into the background as best as possible when people are praising the two of them, tends to accept insults, and is pretty easy to hurt the feelings of- not that she'd ever let you realize it.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: A serious example. Briar is accused of being a selfish, arrogant, cruel, disloyal, gluttonous coward, and she responds with a soft "I'm not disloyal."
  • Never Gets Fat: Can clear five plates easily and stays in shape. A woman comments jealously about this, but Salassya has seen how fast Briar can fall apart without steady access to food, and thinks that she's happy with her own softer build.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: On the giving and receiving end of many. Hers tend to be sober and straight to the point, citing particular examples.
     Sasassya

  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Receives a few from Briar, and returns them with interest. Depending on the situation, these can range from a ten-minute speech, to a single sappy comment, to an off-hand snark.
