[WIP]

Protenus is a WIP original story by Emi

TW for tropes about death, abuse (emotional, physical, and sexual), and pedophilia ; I'll keep content that discusses these topics under a spoiler

Protenus contains the following tropes:

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Somewhat applicable to the (mostly disbanded) Paladins of Light.
  • Adults Are Useless: Enforced through some characters, subverted through others.
  • Amicable Exes: Adam and Cassian for the most part. Cassian isn't still entirely done "grieving" the relationship's end for most of the story, and Adam's decision to recruit Raine to be a Hunter isn't something Cassian is thrilled about. Despite all this, the two still love and care for eachother a great deal and remain friends.
  • Animal Motifs: bears for Barnaby, wolves for Harold, bats for Desdemona, fennec foxes for Tuck, goats for Willow, snakes for Dolcibella, lizards for Gervasio, and cats for Saffron
    • Most Monsters (save Višnja and Jarek) are anthropomorphic beings with lots of features from a specific animal.
  • Another Dimension: The Mirror Dimension
  • Awful Truth:
  • Cast Full of Gay / Everyone Is Bi: There are literally only two or three characters who are heterosexual.
  • Creator Thumbprint: Ah yes, the Emiverse staples: majority LGBT+ cast, polyamory, magic elements, death not always being permanent, found family over blood family, personal horror elements, bloody revenge, etc.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Applies to the majority of the cast.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending:
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: They may be terrible people, but Dolcibella and Erebos are Morticia & Gomez levels of in love with eachother.
  • Everybody Cries:
  • Family of Choice:
    • Cassian's residents, despite being unrelated by blood and coming from wildly different backgrounds, love eachother dearly and consider themselves a family unit.
    • While Amelia and Xanthe both have blood-related family that they reunite with (Amelia with her mother and uncle, and Xanthe with her mother), they ultimately end up being adopted by someone who is more up to the task of parenting.
  • Foil: Oh boy there are quite a few of these... Hikage & Erebos, Virgil & Danforth, Elisedd & Cassian & Flynn...
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Monsters are looked down upon by Demons and cannot exist alongside human society because if their appearance.
    • Wix look down on humans for their lack of magical ability despite the fact that all beings are capable of learning magic, it's just that historically magical knowledge has been hoarded by the privileged.
  • Girl of My Dreams: Technically true, since Lynn is first made aware of Kendra's existence through her visions and the two become romantically involved.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Kinda. Even though there are beings literally called Monsters, the morality of characters is not determined by their species, but rather their actions and if they take advantage of the power they hold to hurt others.
  • It's All My Fault: A sentiment multiple characters express as certain points.
    • Tuck feels that he abandoned Gervasio due to being too caught up in his own grief after his father's passing. He expresses that Gervasio most likely wouldn't have gotten caught in with Dolcibella if ge had been there for him.
    • Diggory and Ainsley both express guilt over being absent familial figures to Amelia when she needed them the most, which is what led to her running away.
    • Xanthe believes she is to blame for Amelia almost being assaulted by Mordecai because she never told Amelia just how dangerous he is.
  • Mystical White Hair: When a human is turned into a Vamp, their natural hair color turns white.
    • While this is visible on Nicoletta, Elisedd, and Flynn, Cassian dyes his hair dark brown to hide it. He claims it's merely an aesthetic preference, but that may not be entirely true.
  • Parental Substitute: Applies to quite a few characters.
    • Cassian and Toussaint act as father figures to Amelia and Xanthe respectively until they each officially adopts them and become actual fathers.
    • Harold is a dad to everyone, not just Desdemona
    • Raine sees Adam as a father figure.
    • Lynn sometimes acts as a motherly figure to Xanthe.
  • Parents as People:
  • Personal Horror:
  • Polyamory: Raine/Barnaby/Elisedd and Tuck/Willow/Candi/Gervasio
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Tuck and Willow
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Amelia and Xanthe. Slightly downplayed.
  • Uncanny Atmosphere: The entirety of The Mirror Dimension
  • Urban Fantasy:
  • You Are Not Alone:
  • You Have Failed Me: Once Dolcibella realizes that Saffron has betrayed her, she orders Gervasio to kill him as punishment.
