"I was never really pretty, so for someone like myself it's more useful to be a character actress than a leading actress... in television especially, they want real wrinkles."

Joan Bogle Hickson OBE, (5 August 1906 — 17 October 1998), was a British actress best known for her portrayal of Miss Marple.

She went to RADA in London and first appeared on stage in 1927. She often played comedic or eccentric characters.

Her first film appearance came seven years later as Mabel in the short film Trouble in Store. In The '40s she appeared in Agatha Christie's Appointment with Death. Christie wrote a note to her afterward stating, "I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple".

When The BBC began producing Agatha Christie's works in The '80s, Hickson was cast as Miss Marple in all 12 adaptations, receiving two BAFTA nominations in 1987 and 1988. Queen Elizabeth II was reported to have been a big fan of her portrayal and told her so when she was bestowed with the OBE.

She died of a stroke at the age of 92.
