Henry James Hayter, (23 April 1907 — 27 March 1983), was a British actor of screen and television.

He was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and he appeared in his first film in 1936. After appearing in films such as The Blue Lagoon (1949), Passport to Pimlico, Night and the City, The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men, The Crimson Pirate and The 39 Steps (1959).

Later in his career, he began to appear in TV roles, such as Captain Webster in The Onedin Line and Mr. Tebbs in Are You Being Served?. Hayter chose to leave AYBS? after one series, as the Mr. Kipling cake company had him employed as their spokesperson and they thought that his role in the innuendo-filled sitcom spoiled their reputation.

He died at the age of 75.

Not to be confused with professional wrestler Jamie Hayter.
