Henry James Hayter, (23 April 1907 -- 27 March 1983), was a British actor of screen and televison.

He was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and he appeared in his first film in 1936. After appearing in films such as ''Film/TheBlueLagoon1949'', ''Film/PassportToPimlico'', ''Film/NightAndTheCity'', ''Film/TheStoryOfRobinHoodAndHisMerrieMen'', ''Film/TheCrimsonPirate'' and ''Film/The39Steps1959''.

Later in his career, he began to appear in TV roles, such as Captain Webster in ''Series/TheOnedinLine'' and Mr. Tebbs in ''Series/AreYouBeingServed''. Hayter chose to leave ''AYBS?'' after one series, as the Mr. Kipling cake company had him employed as their spokesperson and they thought that his role in the innuendo-filled sitcom spoiled their reputation.

He died at the age of 75.
