- What Could Have Been: When Michael J. Fox was initially unavailable to star as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, the producers narrowed their secondary choices down to Howell or Eric Stoltz. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale preferred Howell, but Universal preferred Stoltz, so they started shooting with Stoltz, who was later fired because his performance wasn't matching the producers' expectations for the character. By that time, Fox was available, so Howell became an afterthought, and Stoltz became the Trope Namer for The Other Marty.
