Continuity Nod / Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Go To

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War has a lot of Continuity Nods to previous chapters and episodes, sometimes reflecting a change in the status quo, major or minor. This page is for all of them.

  • Shirogane's fear of bugs in Chapter 7 is brought up again in Chapter 15 while Kaguya (who doesn't know about this) trying it as another war.
  • When Fujiwara mentions to Kaguya in Chapter 22 that her father would force her to sleep in the doghouse with Pes if he found out about her reading shojo manga, she specifies that she means the literal term not the metaphorical one, due to Kaguya's established lack of knowledge in sexual metaphors back in Chapter 14.
  • After the events of Chapter 20, Shirogane can occasionally be seen studying French.
  • Chapter 16 starts with Kaguya practicing calligraphy when Kashiwagi comes to her for relationship advice. Chapter 47 would reveal that it had been her elective during that semester.
  • Fujiwara mentions the "1:3 teenagers have had sex" statistic from Chapter 14 after hearing that Kashiwagi and Tsubasa may have had their first time over summer break in Chapter 48.
  • Chapter 57 has Fujiwara saying that Ishigami is a man that beats women with logic, referring to the many times that Ishigami has made her cry when he points out the flaws in her logic.
  • Shirogane mentions in Chapter 70 that his preferred underwear for women to wear are black panties, just like the ones that Kaguya was wearing during his dream sequence way back on the cover of Chapter 10.
  • When everyone is trying to get Kaguya to read Today Will be Sweet in Chapter 73, she and Fujiwara make reference to the manga they read back in Chapter 22.
  • Chapter 4 of the light novel has a student mentioning how Shirogane called Kaguya to the back of the school in Chapter 61.
  • Chapter 80 has Osaragi mentioning that she's heard Iino's flower story 10 times before. Then she mentions having heard it 11 times when Iino brings it up again in Chapter 103.
  • Ishigami is shown wearing boxer briefs when trying on Kaguya's uniform, as he had switched over to wearing them after Chapter 70.
  • When Papa Shirogane tries to recollect where he's heard Kaguya's voice in Chapter 86, he flashes back to Kaguya's phone call in Chapter 19.
  • The principal and a few students are still playing Pokémon GO during the sports festival..
  • When Ishigami is shown studying in Episode 4 of season 3, his old table can be seen folded up behind him with the marker stains from Shirogane writing "Shut up, Stupid!" still on them.
  • The end of Chapter 112 references the fact that cat ear headbands were banned.
  • Kaguya mentions to Erika that she doesn't want to be photographed during her interview in Chapter 116, as Chapter 100 had established that her family has the policy of never being in a photo that will be released to the public.
  • Shirogane hesitates on jumping into a lake to rescue the Mass Media club president from drowning in Chapter 121 because he can't swim, something which had been established back in Chapter 7.
  • Chapter 123 shows that Kaguya is far better at brewing tea than coffee, as was established in the extra page for Chapter 13. Also, the one who has her stand outside to attract customers as a marketing ploy is Mirin, who had previously been established as being the daughter of an advertising executive back in Chapter 29.
  • Chapter 129 shows an advertisement for Class 2-A's cosplay cafe, which had been the focus of Chapter 123.
  • When Yume Atenbo offers to gauge Kaguya and Shirogane's romantic capability in Chapter 131, Shirogane specifically asks her to check how well they would match if they were already married. Chapter 51 had shown that he had already checked their general compatibility and that they only had a 50% chance of getting together in the first place.
  • When Kaguya is trying to figure out where Shirogane is hiding, the massive balloon sculpture of a whale that Maki made for her can be seen when she passes by Class 2-B's classroom.
  • When the president of the Occult Research Club reads Shirogane's fortune in Chapter 131, she lists his blood type and birth weight just like how Kaguya did in Chapter 51. Kaguya is creeped out by the fact that she knows this.
  • Fujiwara tries and fails to whistle when Kaguya asks if everyone has been studying for the end of semester exams in Episode 8, as the previous episode had established that she didn't know how to.
  • Fujiwara's report card in the fanbook lists Japanese as her worst subject. It had been established back in Chapter 20 that her skill in the language had atrophied as a child due to spending so much time speaking other languages. Kaguya's report card also lists her with 2 absences and having gone home early once (referring to Chapter 33-35 and Chapter 79 respectively)
  • When the final scene of Episode 24 goes to a fantasy sequence of the balloon causing a massive explosion that can be seen from space, the moon is still red and broken in two, just like how it was during the gag at the end of the moon viewing in Episode 15.
  • When Kaguya complains about Shirogane's poor coffee brewing skills in Chapter 141, he mentions that he'll have to ask Fujiwara for help next time since she's the resident coffee person in the student council as shown in the extra page of Chapter 13.
  • When Kaguya comes in with her hair down in Chapter 143, Ishigami mentions that she hasn't done that since that time she put makeup on him on the extra page of Chapter 82.
  • Shirogane is shown counting coffins instead of sheep in Chapter 145, just like he had done 2 chapters earlier.
  • Kaguya comments that Ishigami hasn't changed at all in Chapter 153 after he says that he'd have to intervene if the boy Kaguya liked turned out to be scum, referencing what he did to Ogino in the backstory.
  • When Shirogane sees his Christmas present from Kaguya in Chapter 162 (a stationary set), he comments how it's something that Ishigami would buy. Ishigami had helped her pick out her present when they went Christmas shopping together in Chapter 153, and he also gave Shirogane a fountain pen as a birthday gift way back in Chapter 54.
  • While trying to strike up a conversation with Iino in Chapter 165, Shirogane uses "Do you have any hobbies?" as an icebreaker. He had previously used the exact same line for the same purpose with Kaguya during a flashback in Chapter 37. He also mentions that he practiced rap before, in reference to the rap arc.
  • When Kashiwagi sees the necklace that Kaguya got from Shirogane as a birthday present in Chapter 167, she comments that boys seem to like that sort of thing. Tsubasa had given her a similar necklace as an anniversary present in Chapter 97.
  • Also in the same chapter, Kaguya references the events of Chapter 15 (Note: 152 chapters ago) when talking about what base Kaguya and Shirogane got to in their relationship, as Shirogane accidentally grabbed her chest while unconscious and standing up.
  • When Fujiwara specifies in Chapter 163 that she wants to ensure that Kaguya has a great birthday party so Kaguya will get her something for hers, it's brought up how she only got Shirogane an eraser and some freshly picked flowers back in Chapter 64.
  • Kaguya's friendship test list on extra page of Chapter 172 labels Ishigami as "Estimated to pass based off past results", referencing the coupon incident from his introduction back in Chapter 24.
  • While Hayasaka's friends are exchanging gossip with some other girls in Chapter 183, mention is made of an unseen couple named Tetchan and Miipan. Onodera had mentioned in Chapter 158 that they got back together as part of the fallout from Tsubame's boyfriend cheating on her.
  • Also during Chapter 183, Kaguya mentions that shojo manga makes Hayasaka cry (Chapter 74) and that she builds PCs in her spare time (Chapter 58) when arguing with Hayasaka's friends about who is closer to her.
  • During the montage in Chapter 187, Shirogane and Kaguya visit a souvenir shop. Shirogane had mentioned buying stuff from that very same store 3 chapters earlier when he and Hayasaka borrowed the owner's motorcycle to get away from Unyo's goons.
  • In Chapter 191, both Shizuku Asahi and Yume Atenbo tell Tsubame Ishigami is a good boy. This not only refers to all club presidents being told by Kaguya about Ishigami's story, but is also a rare reference to We Want to Talk About Kaguya, where the Mass Media Club girls form a bond with Ishigami.
  • In Chapter 192, Tsubame opens a conversation with Osaragi in a flashback the same way she did with Ishigami, and like in Ishigami's case, Tsubame appears to be The Faceless initially.
  • In Chapter 193, Maki mentions that she copies sutras to relax, which is also the same method that Iino is seen using in Chapter 190.
  • Chapter 195 has Shirogane making sure the Valentine Day chocolates he received weren't tampered with like the chocolates he received in Chapter 14's flashback.
  • In the same chapter, the Cubari Facacciamo, mentioned once as a one-off joke in Chapter 59, is revealed to have been Valentines chocolate made by Kaguya that later became sentient.
  • Shirogane panics when Kaguya offers to give him a foot massage in Chapter 199, remembering what happened with her hand massage back in Chapter 71. Kaguya's offer is even shown in the exact same pose.
  • Ishigami is shown getting applause when he introduces himself to his class at the start of the new school year in Chapter 211, with it being noted that it's a result of Tsubame using her social clout to repair his reputation prior to her graduation.
  • Shindou mentions in Chapter 212 how Mikado was in India over winter break, and they in turn think how it was because of Maki.
  • When Shirogane takes Kaguya to his family's new apartment in Chapter 218, the very first thing he shows her is that they have an electronic lock. That was the one thing that Papa Shirogane said he wanted when Shirogane was picking out the place in Chapter 197.
  • In Chapter 218, the three others council members are conveniently out so Kaguya and Shirogane can be alone, with Iino in particular saying that she had a patrol for the public morals committee. But in Chapter 226, Fujiwara tells Iino she knows she actually went straight home because Ishigami was hanging out with a group including Tsubame.
  • Chapter 226 opens with a scene similar to the one in Chapter 5 where Kaguya was scandalized by seeing a couple sharing lunch, only now it's Iino reacting to her and Shirogane. Ishigami is also still following the workout routine that Kazeno gave him back in Chapter 166.
  • When Kei sees Hayasaka in Chapter 243, she remembers her from the video call Shirogane had with Hayasaka back in Chapter 106
  • When Koromo mentions in Chapter 245 that stalkers are a common problem among people in the entertainment industry and she's had to move multiple times in the past, Osaragi nods in agreement since her entire family works in show business. This was also what prompted the Shirogane family moving to a new apartment in Chapter 197.
  • In chapter 255, Fujiwara admits that she wouldn't mind a kiss from Hayasaka anymore. She clearly remembers the events of Chapter 152 when Hayasaka tried to plant one on her in a moment of desperation.
  • In chapter 277, Makki-senhai ask President Iino to increase the TG club budget for one cola, using exactly the same words as Fujiwara in chapter 29.
  • In chapter 74, Fujiwara talks about a sumo match that she really enjoyed, and in chapter 197 she recommends Shirogane move to Ryogoku, which is famed for its sumo arena. At the end of chapter 279, Fujiwara reveals that her preferred partner would be a sumo wrestler.
  • Chapter 192 of We Want to Talk About Kaguya ends with the reveal that Erika eventually opens a restaurant named Miso-Matsuri, which was the hypothetical name for a ramen shop that she had discussed with Kazamatsuri 21 chapters prior.
  • The series ends with Kaguya and Shirogane debating whether the student council should go to the mountains or the beach for their graduation trip, just like back in Chapter 7 when they were trying to figure out where they should go over summer break.
