Elvie is a comic started in 2014. It was published in every issue of the monthly Linux Voice magazine, and is currently published in Linux (Pro) Magazine, starting from issue #193. It focuses on tech, Linux, and current events.


Elvie contains examples of:

  • Forgot to Pay the Bill: One strip features Elvie installing various smart lightbulbs around the house that change different colors to tell her things like what the weather is going to be like, or to remind her when her favorite TV show is about to come on. When she's plunged into darkness and asked what it means when all the bulbs switch off she replies it means she's forgotten to pay the electricity bill.
  • Freudian Couch: Elvie lies on a couch facing the ceiling in virtual reality therapy.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Elvie has worked in an office, hosted seminars, managed a school's database, sold merchandise, sold electronics, worked at a camp, been a photographer, and applied for a tech support job.
  • One-Word Title: Protagonist Title
  • Press Hat: Elvie wears one when she conducts interviews.
  • Protagonist Title: Elvie is the main character's name.
  • Shout-Out:
    • A stick figure has a son named "Robert'); DROP TABLE Students;--", just like in xkcd.
    • Elvie remakes a Super Mario Bros. game, replacing Mario with the Linux mascot Tux.
    • Elvie tries to sell a Doctor Who scarf.
    • A recurring setting is the cafĂ© "Orwell's", established 1984, a reference to George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.
  • Special Edition Title:
    • The title changes to Elfie when Elvie plays NetHack.
    • The title changes to Elvis in a comic about Elvie's GitHub username.
    • The title changes to Selfie when Elvie draws an SVG self-portrait.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Elvie's outfit changes in nearly every comic, including her hair colour.
