Jean Grey is a 2023 Marvel Comics title, written by veteran X-Men writer Louise Simonson and drawn by Bernard Chang. It is part of the Fall of X Event.
In the wake of the disastrous events at the 3rd Hellfire Gala, Jean Grey is dead, Krakoa has fallen, and Orchis is victorious. But death has never been known to keep Jean Grey down. Jean must save herself and to do that she’s going to look into her past and find out where it all went wrong.
Jean Grey (2023) provides examples of:
- All Your Powers Combined: In the alternate Inferno, Madelyn ends up with demon magic from Limbo, the T-O virus, and the Phoenix power that Jean refused.
- Became Their Own Antithesis: In the alternate past witnessed in Issue #1, Jean ultimately resorts to mind-wiping even friends such as Hank in the belief that only she can "protect" other mutants,
- Cross Through: Immortal X-Men does this in issue #16 as Hope and Exodus find Jean and learn they’re in the White Hot Room, meaning Jean was resurrected by the Phoenix.
- Death Is Cheap: In the opening of the first issue, Jean observes that death is nothing new to her, alluding to the many times she’s already died and returned to life.
- Drunk on the Dark Side: Basically happens to Logan when he becomes the host to the Phoenix in #2, tearing through the various Weapon X facilities and ultimately killing Cyclops and himself because he thinks nobody could control this power.
- Dying as Yourself: #2 ends with Logan taking the Phoenix Force back from Cyclops and then killing himself before it can properly take control of him again.
- It's All My Fault: In the first issue, Jean blames herself for what happened at the Gala, though she can’t really pinpoint why it’s her fault.
- Recycled Title: The series is simply titled Jean Grey, with no subtitle, the same as the 2017 series starring Jean.
- People Puppet: The AU of #2 starts with Logan volunteering to pilot the shuttle so he can act as this for Jean, observing that his healing factor will help him survive the radiation while Jean uses her telepathy to guide him in flying the craft.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Jean basically becomes this in #1, using her future knowledge to justify mind-wiping enemies and brainwashing the parents of mutant children in the name of protecting them from the general public.
- What If?: The storyline deals with Jean wondering where things went wrong and what would have happened had things went differently. The series could practically be called What If?: Jean Grey.
- Issue #1 asks what if the original five X-Men, who were once brought into their own future, kept their memories of that trip after the events of Extermination (2018) returned them to the past.
- Issue #2 asks what if someone else got the Phoenix Force instead of her; in this case, Logan took the controls with Jean telepathically guiding him.
- Issue #3 has a two-fer where during Inferno, what if she saved baby Christopher from ever being handed over to Madelyne Pryor, and then refused to take back the Phoenix fragment that brought Pryor to life.
