Inferno Ignite!

Inferno Girl Red is a graphic novel and comic book, written by Matt Groom, with art by Erica D'urso. Book One officially began as a Kickstarter project and was published as an original graphic novel in November 2022, before being published as a three-issue miniseries by Image Comics beginning in January 2023.

Cássia Costa has just moved to Helix Campus, a prestigious school in Apex City. Cássia grew up hearing stories about Inferno Girl Red, a supposed superhero, from her mother. When Apex City is somehow ripped from the planet and sent to an alternate dimension, Cássia gains the power to turn into Inferno Girl Red, just as creatures begin attacking the school. Now, Cássia is forced to step up as the new Inferno Girl Red to protect her new home.

Inferno Girl Red is one of the first parts of the Massive-Verse, with Cássia's first appearance being in the Supermassive one-shot that formally launched the universe, featuring her teaming up with Radiant Black and Rogue Sun. Inferno Girl Red itself was teased and referenced in the backmatter of Radiant Black, in the lead-up to its Kickstarter launching.

Tropes in Inferno Girl Red:

  • Animal Motif: Dragons for Inferno Girl Red. It's part of the suit design, and the first IGR was able to shape her energy blasts into dragons.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: "Inferno Ignite" is the phrase used by them to transform, while also making a hand gesture over the bracelet. Cássia’s mum thinks shouting it is mandatory, and Cássia’s first attempt doesn't work when she just says it, only when she yells it.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Inferno Girl Red is primarily red, and the Flash Forward we see in Supermassive had her finding two allies, one blue and one green.
  • Foregone Conclusion: The first issue of Book One ends with Cássia wanting to remove the powers. Even acknowledging this is her origin and it's normal, we the audience knows this doesn't happen, as Cássia had already shown up in Supermassive, experienced with and acknowledging her powers.
  • Flight: One of the Inferno Girl Red powers is the ability to sprout energy wings and fly.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Cássia’s mum is one, having previously reported on crime as well as Inferno Girl Red. The latter makes it difficult for her to find a job, as people don't think IGR exists.
  • Legacy Character: There was at least one Inferno Girl Red prior to Cássia, implied to have been Doctor Caro.
  • The Multiverse: Apex City is transported to another dimension, and Cássia’s home dimension itself is different from other titles set in the Massive-Verse.
  • Refusal of the Call: After she gains the Inferno Girl Red powers and uses them to save her roommate, Cássia immediately wants to get rid of them.
  • Red Is Heroic: Inferno Girl Red's primary colour is, obviously, red.
  • Struggling Single Mother: Cássia was poor growing up, but doesn't blame Ana for anything and just wants to be able to make sure she and her mother can live comfortably.
