Character sheet for Vainqueur the Dragon.

    Vainqueur

Vainqueur Knightsbane

The titular red dragon.
  • Benevolent Boss: Zigzagged. Vainqueur cows his minions by threatening to eat them if they fail to keep up with his demands. He's often pushy and forces them to work on incredibly difficult tasks and does very little in the actual "leading" except to marshal them to battle. Despite this, he considers his minions an extension of his hoard and will defend them with his life. He also rewards good service and genuinely believes the best of his most capable minions, particularly Victor, whom Vainqueur has the utmost faith in. In fact, Vainqueur comes to consider Victor the crown jewel of his hoard. So he demands Victor to become immortal so Vainqueur can keep him forever. When Victor is killed and inflicted with Necrophobia to prevent his resurrection, Vainqueur sacrifices his entire hoard of gold without hesitation to get Shesha to revive Victor.
  • Berserk Button: Vainqueur literally gains the Berserk status after Furibon transmutes his gold to lead.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: As a dragon, Vainqueur cannot really be measured in "good" or "evil". All he cares about is feeding himself, amassing more wealth for his hoard, and kidnapping princesses. Manlings are just food to thim, so it's perfectly natural for him to pop a few as a snack or deal with someone who annoys him. But while he doesn't care about collateral damage, he does fulfill his end of any bargains he makes and expects to be compensated for his efforts.
  • Boxing Battler: In Ch. 51, When Vainqueur realizes the giant golem he is fighting is immune to almost all his draconic abilities, he gets up on his hind legs, activates his unarmed combat skill, and dismantles the golem through boxing. Even the System is so impressed that it calls the fight 'beeping awesome' and awards him eleven levels for that one fight.
  • The Ditz: Vainqueur comes off as this most of the time, in a mix of Intelligence being his Dump Stat, an utter lack of common sense, and being so powerful that he doesn't need to think leads to him acting very, very dim.
  • Does Not Understand Sarcasm: Being utterly arrogant, Vainqueur never realizes when Victor is back sassing him, which Victor takes full advantage of for stress relief. Until Vainqueur gains more Intelligence points...
  • Enlightened Self-Interest: After discovering how the System can make him even more money to add to his hoard, Vainqueur becomes an adventurer fighting evil faeries and demons, renovating villages, and killing bandits. It's not out of any sense of "kindness", but instead to gain levels to increase the size of his hoard so he can brag about it to the other dragons.
  • Fisher King: Vainqueur gains a Perk with this exact name, buffing his allies while his health is high but penalising them if it's very low, and making the penalty permanent if he dies.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Being an enormous dragon, Vainqueur is incredibly strong, fast, and tough and has the ability to fly. Most attacks harmlessly ping off his scales and he can crush fortress walls with his blows.
  • Meaningful Name: "Vainqueur" is French for "victor," fitting for a dragon who killed countless knights and believes he can triumph over anything.
  • Monster Adventurers: For a different reason from usual. Vainqueur does not feel the need to move up the food chain.
  • Smug Super: Vainqueur is every bit as arrogant as you would expect from a centuries-old great dragon.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: He loves to introduce himself as "Vainqueur Knightsbane, First of his Name, Great Calamity of this Age, and King of the Albain Mountains". After declaring himself an emperor, he tacks on "Emperor of Murmurin".
  • World's Strongest Man: Er, dragon. Vainqueur is widely regarded as the most powerful of his species of a race just as, if not more powerful than all but the strongest demons and formors. As such, few people can pose a serious challenge to him.

    Victor Dalton

Victor Dalton

A Rogue class adventurer that becomes the first servant of Vainqueur. Was born on earth but was transported to Vainqueur's world.
  • The Ageless: As he continues training the Reaper class, Victor gains the ability to delay his own ageing by harvesting souls, and multiple victims stack.
    Victor: Guys, I'm immortal!
Goblina: Shush! I have an [Eldritch Philosophy] exam tomorrow.
Victor: Sorry, I can’t hear you over the sound of my ill-gotten eternal youth!
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Victor's goodness is a bit debatable, but he's certainly a much nicer person than you would expect from someone who wears black spiked armour and harvests the souls of his fallen enemies for power.
  • Benevolent Boss: For all his faults, Victor is consistently nice to the other minions, particularly the Kobold Rangers. He goes out of his way to ensure their well-being and is heartbroken when Yellow and Blue die, resolving to take up necromancy to resurrect them.
  • Brains and Brawn: He's the brains to Vainqueur's brawn. While Vainqueur is one of the most powerful entities around, his intelligence stat is a paltry 14 even after he starts Level Grinding. Victor does his best to steer Vainqueur's greed and ego in a more favorable direction for the dragon's benefit and that of others.
  • Butt-Monkey: As Vainqueur's chief of staff and chief lackey, this is Victor's job.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While he's not quite "good", Victor is consistently nicer than most of the enemies he faces while wielding sinister dark powers like necromancy and curses against his foes.
  • The Dragon: Ironically, Victor serves as the second in command to a dragon. He gradually accepts his role.
  • Dragon Knight: Victor becomes one, much to Vainqueur's delight.
  • Dragon Tamer: While ostensibly their servant, Victor learns how to get the titular dragon to fit into society.
  • Expy: Victor's snarky personality, down-on-his-luck backstory, and fraught relationship with an incredibly powerful (and troublesome) entity make him a clear Shout-Out to Kazuma from KonoSuba. The webcomic adaptation even gives him the same hair and eye color along with similar clothes.
  • Guile Hero: While he can fight, battle is not Victor's strongest suit. Most of his successes come down to convincing Vainqueur to use his power productively while striking deals and bargains for the sake of maximizing Vainqueur's wealth and resources.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Victor is more or less stuck being Vainqueur's lackey for the rest of his days. But given how he now has significant authority, a plethora of new perks, and is protected by one of the most powerful entities around. He admits that he can get used to this and that it's a big step up for him compared to when he first got thrown into the world and forced to become a thief.
  • Mouth of Sauron: Usually has to fill this role as Vainqueur is unwilling to explain himself.
  • Number Two: Vainqueur's first and (eventually) his most loyal minion. Vainqueur considers Victor his chief of staff and grants Victor nearly limitless authority with which to carry out his will.
  • Power Copying: One of his perks grants him the ability to copy the perks of other monsters if he survives getting hit with them.
  • Sinister Scythe: After becoming a Reaper, Victor gains the ability to wield a scythe with lethal effect as well as use it to cast magic.
  • Villainous Friendship: As the story goes on, Victor starts to like the dragon who forced him into being a minion.
  • Weredragon: After becoming a Monster Squire, Victor becomes a transhuman who is part-dragon while remaining completely outwardly human. After he ranks up to Dragon Knight, he sprouts a dragon's wings and tail.

    Furibon
A lich who turned Vainqueur's gold hoard to lead, earning his hatred.
  • Recurring Boss: Furibon eventually becomes this, culminating in being Victor's final trial before ascension.
  • Troll: Furibon gains increasing tendencies toward this to dragons in general and Vainqueur in particular, eventually to the point of obsession. Fitting, given he's a troll lich.

    Vainqueur empire

    Dragons

Icefang

A white frost dragon. Vainqueur's rival. Favors silver over gold in a hoard.

Jolie

A red dragon. Vainqueur's beloved niece.
  • Straw Vegetarian: She's the dragon equivalent of a vegetarian: a "cattletarian," meaning she only eats non-speaking animals and cattle on the grounds that sentient beings have souls too, and has no problem commenting on the actions of non-cattletarian dragons. But upon seeing a speaking cow demon, she says "A talking cow? It’s grey enough not to count for my regime!" and enthusiastically claims dibs on eating it. She also shares the majority opinion amongst dragons that elves aren't people, so she's totally fine with eating them.
