Second Class Passengers

The Second Class consists of trained employees who attend to the needs of the First Class. They hold positions or have expertise that merits respect, and as such they're almost as well off as they are. It's implied that some of Second Class had enough scratch to buy tickets to get themselves there.

    In General

  • Butt-Monkey: Pelton mentions in season 2 that Second tends to suffer greatly regardless of who's running the train.
  • Neutral No Longer: Second Class has mostly stayed neutral to the events in the train. By the climax of the rebellion in Season 1, most choose to throw their lot with the rebels.

    Jinju

Jinju Seong

Portrayed By: Susan Park

The finest chef at the train's finest restaurant, and a member of the train's elite. She oversees the agricultural and aquarium cars, frequently taking dives in the latter to harvest ingredients personally.

  • Almighty Janitor: She's one of Melanie's main advisors and confidants despite being a mere cook in Second. That said, certain scenes imply she's key in the train's agricultural sections, likely explaining her prominence.
  • The Confidant: One of the very few Melanie is able to trust with her secret, even being asked for advice on several occasions.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While LJ, the Folgers and even Martin and York are seen laughing and raucously baying as a riot breaks out at Fight Night, she's seen in the background of their viewing deck looking utterly disgusted at it all.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: She really doesn't want to have to choose between Till and Melanie, implicitly because she'd choose the latter. Till simply tells her to stay in her room and stay safe instead of forcing her to a side.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She's beautiful and feminine, and in a passionate relationship with Till. Sadly they break it off in the final episode of the first season after Till chooses her principles over her.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Shows shades of this. She's Snowpiercer's foremost agricultural expert, but she's also extremely knowledgeable about the process of bringing people out the drawers (even assisting Klimpt), and it's implied she helped engineer the process.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's one of the few people who know that Melanie is impersonating Mr. Wilford.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While Till's mentioned her a few times, the character has disappeared in season 2, with no word on what's actually happened to her.

    Klimpt

Dr. Henry Klimpt

Portrayed By: Happy Anderson

A research scientist-turned-doctor, who oversees those unfortunate enough to be sentenced to the coffin-like Drawers.

  • Black Market Produce: He sells the chemicals needed to keep those in the drawers under, allowing black marketeers like Terence to produce Kronole.
  • Hidden Depths: At first glance, Klimpt seems like a generically creepy scientist-turned-jailer, but he has insightful thoughts about the nature of life on Snowpiercer. He also trades in kronole not to increase his own standing, but to provide the comforts for the inhabitants of the Drawers that Wilford never thought to invest in.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: He's an essential part of the train's Black Market, but unlike amoral freebooters like Terence and Oz he only does so to provide a level of comfort for those in the Drawers that the original designers didn;t consider.
  • No Social Skills: Doesn't seem to interact with people beyond those who visit the Drawers, lavishing affection and care on those within them instead.
  • Sole Surviving Scientist: He's a former research scientist, and qualified scientists generally are in short supply on Snowpiercer. More specifically, Melanie claims that his work on the Drawers is designed to master the science behind Human Popsicles to save people in the event that the train someday breaks down.

    Miss Gillies

Mary Elizabeth Gillies

Portrayed By: Fiona Vroom

The train's schoolteacher.

  • Cool Teacher: She seems to be encouraging towards the class, capable of independent thought (as opposed to The Teacher from the movie), concerned for her students during a near disaster, and has Bojan as a guest speaker at one point.
  • Interclass Friendship: A literal example. When serving on the Tribunal for LJ Folger she gets along well with the other two jurors, one from first class and one from third.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Her middle and last names are likely a reference to the actress and singer Elizabeth Gillies.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Uses a syrupy voice and empty patter to distract Bennett so Josie can speak to Miles while he's being treated, and later to cover her own conspiring with Martin Colvin against the Folgers.
  • The Mole: She seems to be an ally of the Tailies, helping Josie visit Miles against Melanie's orders and also working with a supporter of Melanie during the Folger revolt in a way that suggests an Enemy Mine scenario.
    • Subtly implied in season three too: when Dr. Pelton needs to pull Winnie out of class to deliver information to Ruth on behalf of the anti-Wilford resistance, Miss Gillies nods for Winnie to leave, all the while remaining beneath suspicion enough to be invited to LJ and Oz's "Loyal Wedding" alongside Wilford's inner circle.

    Dr. Pelton

Dr. Pelton

Portrayed By: Karin Konoval

A doctor onboard the train who sometimes works with Layton and the Brakemen.

  • Closest Thing We Got: Of all the doctors on the train she has the most experience with dead bodies, but she isn't a medical examiner by trade.
  • Combat Medic: She was an army medic in the Middle East before the Freeze.
  • The Coroner: She's the one who analyzes what was done to the murder victims.
  • Internal Reformist: She seems to hold some sympathy towards the Tail and Layton, and testifies firmly for the prosecution in the killer's trial.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: She knows that Melanie has a list of people to put in the Drawers, including her, and suspects it's a list of dissidents to serve as Unwitting Test Subject's for one thing or another. Melanie claims it's actually a list of important people to save if the train suffers a crisis.
