Archbishop Mayne
That witch! How could she be so lacking in "righteousness!"
The one of the primary antagonists during The Church arc.- Ambition Is Evil: He did a great many nasty things in his quest to become Pope.
- Awful Truth: He's shown the truth about the founders of The Church, and who all the previous Popes were, not to mention the "anti-witch" propaganda. While initially shaken, he goes right back to believing he had Omniscient Morality License.
- Bullying a Dragon: Combined with Stupid Evil and Too Dumb to Live. Despite seeing Zero seemingly vaporize people by sight, and Zero having absolutely no reason to obey his orders without question at the time (since she was of equal rank in The Church), he drove himself into a rage the moment she went off and did her own thing. He also knew Zero was more than a little nuts after what The Church and her own ability put her through. The moment he became assured to be the next Pope, because the current Pope, Zero's Morality Chain, was dying, he locks her up in a cell and tortures her. It shouldn't surprise anyone what happens when he finds himself with Zero, alone...
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Repeatedly. Zero had... "fun".
- Hypocrite: He is a man that locked King Wimbledon (alongside many others) in a dungeon with no sunlight for months, unleashed an artificial plague upon the four kingdoms, waiting until the suffering and death reaches its zenith before promising a cure to those who bend their knees to The Church, and organized human trafficking rings to secure children, especially little girls, into orphanages, and led purges akin to the Salem Witch "trials," but when he sees Zero give some refugees of the Wolfheart kingdom a "trial by combat", he drives himself into a rage at Zero's "lack of righteousness".
- I've Come Too Far: He fully realizes his actions are evil, but when presented the opportunity to quietly withdraw, he refuses because he believes if he gives up on becoming pope, his actions were all meaningless.
- Necessarily Evil: His stance on The Church's actions, including unleashing an artificially created plague upon the four kingdoms.
- Right for the Wrong Reasons: When the real King Wimbledon told him "I'll see you in hell." He rebuffed the dying king, thinking "God" would forgive all his evil acts. In reality, he got sucked into Zero's Soul battle and consumed, while the true King Wimbledon was Driven to Suicide.
- The Scapegoat: Isabella blames him, and him alone, for The Church's defeat at the hands of Roland when she's trying to convince nuns and orphans who had rightfully barricaded themselves in Church strongholds when Roland's armies come along to rescue them from Appen Moya.
- Smug Snake: Until his last moments, he pranced around as if he was untouchable, believing he was chosen by "God". He found out how wrong he was, far, far too late when Zero was tearing into him.
Archbishop Tayfun
One of the three archbishops in the beginning of the story.
- This Cannot Be!: His reaction to seeing God's Punishment Army soldiers capable of independent thought.
Archbishop Heather
One of the three archbishops in the beginning of the story.
- Blood Knight: She is the one most likely to advocate extreme measures against their enemies.
- Defiant to the End: She did not submit to Garcia even under torture.
- Fantastic Racism: Has a marked dislike of nobles.
The unnamed Bishop
Bwahaha! Now we will see "God's Smile!"
An unnamed bishop whose name was struck from official records after impersonating King Wimbledon and setting up the "contest of worth" in Graycastle.- Better to Die than Be Killed: He stabs himself with a sword when Timothy catches on to him, and Gerald is storming the castle, so he could trigger a civil war between the Wimbledon siblings.
- Dead Person Impersonation: That was certainly the plan, although he didn't know the real King Wimbledon was in Hermes's secret dungeon.
- False Flag Operation: One of many The Church set up in the story to facilitate their "grand plan" to conquer and assimilate the four kingdoms.
- Laughing Mad: He certainly played the part when Timothy caught on to his treachery and confronted him, then stabbed himself with a sword.
- No Name Given: His name was never mentioned, and never will.
High Priest Tylo
We wish you to restore peace as soon as possible.
The clergy representative who meets Roland at Longsong.- The Aggressive Drug Dealer: Comes to Roland with "Berserker Pills," and the power of The Church behind him.
- Asshole Victim: When Timothy raided his church for berserker pills, killing everyone inside, including himself, there were no tears shed.
- Faux Affably Evil: Speaks with polite words and body-language, but holds everyone outside The Church with nothing but contempt.
- High Priest: It's in his title. He's the top of the clergy at Longsong.
Cleric Gardner
One of the "controllers" for God's Punishment Army.
- An Arm and a Leg: He comes back from a confrontation with First Army missing an arm.
- He Knows Too Much: Zero soul-battled and consumed him, not just to learn what Roland was fielding, but so nobody else in The Church found out.
- Humble Pie: His battle with First Army really knocked him off his self-righteous pedestal.
- Small Name, Big Ego: He's a very low ranked soldier for The Church, but believed he should have been in charge.
- Suicidal Overconfidence: He took 20 God's Punishment Warriors and a contingent of Knights to deal with First Army, in violation of "Mayne's" orders, thinking he was going to be dealing with conscripted peasants wielding torches and pitchforks, coming home with an easy victory... Say hello to trench warfare, snipers with anti-materiel rifles, heavy machine guns, and cannons.
