Player Characters

  • Death Seeker: Downplayed. According to their commander, they are as ready for death as a summer dance.
  • Friend to All Living Things: They speak very kindly to Sheffield the cat and refer to the hawk as "Beautiful One"
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Their attempt to help a dying woman gets them trapped in Har'Akir.
  • Persona Non Grata: The players are extremely unwelcome in Muhar, as it is believed foreigners bring plague. Some of the villagers even want to try and lynch the party.
  • Purple Prose: They speak in a very extravagant manner.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: With Min Deir, and to a lesser extent Sennef.
Sennef: No, my injury speeds me along. Why in fact on hands and knees I discovered all of this place!
  • There's No Place Like Home: Their motivation is to get back home.

NPCs

The player may meet NPC's that can join them on their quests in Har'Akir. They may keep up to two at once.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Other desert trolls torture Anhg Krag. Because he decided it would be wrong to eat Hrak Tur. Also, he wants to have friends, rather then eat people like other trolls.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Sennef will chew out the other members of the village if the party rescues her. Even further, she calls out the Despairing Father and the Grieving Widow for their abject lack of gratitude when the stranger helps them, and brokers none of their excuses.
  • Blind Seer: Min Deir is permanently blind. Unlike most examples of this trope, she didn't lose her sight because of prophecy, but because the High Priestess of Set gouged her eyes out.
  • Crutch Character: Anhg Krag the troll. He hits hard, requires no weapons, has armor that makes him nigh-invulnerable and doesn't need water. However, he can't level up.
  • Escort Mission: Sennef, Min Deir, and Kineta all need to be escorted to a specific place, where they will leave after that point.
  • Exact Words: The ghost in the tomb claims that Min Deir will get home safely after she leaves the party. Once she gets back there, she dies.
  • It's Personal: Piotra wants revenge on Ankhtepot because his entire family was taken by the Wrath. In added irony, the Hierophant was the one who created the plague, and Ankhtepot is the method by which Piotra could get revenge.
  • Joke Character: Sennef has only 5 hit points, Kineta only two. They also can't gain levels or use any equipment aside from fists. Fortunately, they disappear once their Escort Mission is completed.
  • Resurrective Immortality: If "killed", Gloriantha will return from death by herself while the party rests.
  • Oh, Crap!: Trajan Khet is afraid of the Stone Golems that patrol the Pharaoh's Rest. But he will not run away if he goes there.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Hrak Tur is a wemic, who has the bottom of a horse but the top of a lion.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Sethir Rha is a jackalwere, who unlike other members of his kind, is not evil.
  • Secret Test of Character: A few of them are part of the test the Guide of the Dead uses to judge the party: Escorting Sennef, Kineta or Min Deir to their respective destinations; returning Piotra's Dagger to him on request; and killing Senmet, which ties into Gloriantha's story.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: Trajan Khet can tell a lot from a set of footprints.
  • Unfinished Business: Gloriantha the undead paladin will not rest until Senmet is defeated. Once he's dead, she disappears permanently. She even states that she could not stay even if she wished to.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Min Deir is old and has literally no filter at all. Part of it could be because she speaks through a helm of telepathy and therefore can only, literally, say what is on her mind.
Min Deir: The journey is only going to get harder, because now you have to protect an old blind woman.
Min Deir: Take all the time you want. The plague isn't going to spare you, and I'm sure it will give you all the time you want.
  • There's No Place Like Home: Piotra wants nothing more than to return to Barovia.
