Ramy's Family
Ramy Hassan
Ramy Hassan
Played by: Ramy Youssef
- Actor IS the Title Character: The show is based on Ramy Youssef's experiences and people he's known, but in a more fictional version than what (likely) happened.
- Bad Liar: Ramy has this in many scenes.
- Cannot Keep a Secret: To such an extent that his close friends try to avoid telling him stuff, because he'll just blurt things out often worded in such a way that hurts others.
- Cannot Tell a Lie: He can sometimes lie by omission but he is uncapable of outright lying to anyone.
- Endearingly Dorky: Ramy can have shades of this, to some.
Dena Hassan
Dena Hassan
Played by: May Calamawy
Ramy's younger sister, a strong-headed young woman studying to go off to law school, while dealing with the stigma of being a Muslim Milennial woman.
- Calling the Young Man Out: Dena gets a version of this towards Ramy. Previous events have shown that Ramy is just going through a breakup and finds himself chafing at the expectations of his Muslim community, and asks for his parents to arrange for him to meet a Muslim woman. This infuriates Dena, as she (rightly, depending on the viewer) views it as only a matter of time before they "start staring at my stomach like it's the answer to their mid-life crisis."
Farouk "Frank" Hassan
Farouk "Frank" Hassan
Played by: Amr Waked
Ramy and Dena's father.
- Unconfessed Unemployment: "Frank in the Future" shows that he lost his job but is too ashamed to tell the family, especially since he has to fund Ramy's wedding.
Maysa Hassan
Maysa Hassan
Played by: Hiam Abbass
- Innocently Insensitive: Maysa is a fundamentally good person who was raised conservatively, which comes out in her interactions with her Lyft passengers. In attempts to make conversation with them, she commits microaggressions like telling a black woman she would be prettier if her hair was straight and misgendering a trans passenger.
Uncle Naseem
Uncle Naseem
Played by: Laith Nakli
Maysa's brother, Nazeem, owner of a successful jewelery business in town. He later hires Ramy to help him out at the business in season 2.
- All Jews Are Cheapskates: Uncle Nazeem, a jeweler, has many Jewish clients at his business. Unfortunately, this hasn't improved his view of them.
- Armoured Closet Gay: It's shown in a brief scene in season 2 that Naseem is gay and has been hiding it for quite some time. Who knows if that was the reason he divorced his wife, instead of the less defensible "divorcing her for going to college" thing. The reveal certainly doesn't make him sympathetic, when in his first appearance, he talks about making his employee pay full price on a ring just for being gay.
Ramy's Friends
Steve Russo
Steve Russo
Played by Steve Way
Ramy's childhood friend, Steve, who suffers from muscular dystrophy.
- Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Parodied in the second episode, when Ramy and Steve's techbro ex-boss tells Steve (who has muscular dystrophy and requires a special wheelchair to get around) that when he looks at Steve, he is reminded that life could be so much worse.
