* MistakenForGay: Subverted. When Dale again rejects him, Bug thinks that it's because Dale is ashamed of him for being gay. Dale actually threatened to disown him after mistakenly thinking Bug was a Federal agent. When Bug finally comes out to Dale as gay and assures him that he is not a government agent, Dale is warmly supportive.

* EloquentInTheirNativeTongue: He sounds much less oafish when he speaks Creole.

* NiceGirl: Despite Nancy's long period affair with John and that she can be quite amoral and smug, she is very nice towards others. She calls everyone "sug"(short for "sugar" a really nice, sweet, friendly nickname)

* WomenAreWiser: Mostly averted; she's greedy, ambitious and kind of a {{Jerkass}} just like her husband, but she is more willing to interact with her neighbors than Kahn is. She's much more accepting of Bobby and Connie's relationship than Kahn, though; in "Father of the Bribe", when it looks like they might break up, Minh [[LetMeTellYouAStory tells Connie how she and Kahn met]] and that, despite their differences, she knew he was right for her, and that the only person who knows if Bobby is right for Connie is Connie herself.

* AsianRudeness: After Cotton, Kahn and Minh are the most abraisive recurring characters and they have strong Laotian accents. Connie is much nicer though and coincidentally has an American accent.

* TheBeard: His estrangement from Dale began when Dale caught him kissing Nancy at his wedding, and Dale mistook it for him making a move on Nancy. In actuality, he had been caught flirting with his lover and eventual husband, Juan Pedro, by Dale and Nancy, and in desperation to not be outed as gay, he grabbed Nancy and kissed her.

* BeYourself: After "Orange You Sad I Did Say Banana", Kahn realizes he doesn't have to cater to Ted Wassanasong's every whim to earn his approval and shouldn't let Ted tell him or his family how to live. Kahn likes his American lifestyle, and it makes him and his family happy, so if Ted calls him a banana (a slang for an Asian person acting like a white person), who cares?

* DatingWhatDaddyHates: According to Minh, she dated Kahn when he used to be a rebel, which pissed off her father.

* RetCon: In early flashbacks, as seen in the accompanying picture, he looks and sounds exactly like his son, Dale, and was voiced by Dale's actor, Johnny Hardwick using a slightly deeper rendition of Dale's voice. When he finally shows up for real in the series, he has a much different appearance and is voiced by David Herman in a higher-pitched voice.

* TheUnintelligible: His fast-talking, slurred and heavily-accented speech (based on an angry hillbilly who called Mike Judge to complain about ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButtHead'', which he called "Porky's Butthole") can make figuring out what he's trying to say an impossible feat for new viewers. That said, [[DownplayedTrope once you become accustomed to his speaking patterns he becomes much easier to understand, and his dialogue always makes sense in the context that he says it in]]. Humorously, in TheRashomon episode, ''everyone else'' is unintelligible when he tells his side of the story.

** A smaller example of either this or a SeriesContinuityError occurs in a later, post-coming out episode, where Dale offhandedly refers to his dad's "boyfriend Stefano" instead of Juan Pedro. Either they broke up offscreen or the writers just forgot his name.
