Anton Meyer

Actor(s): George Irving

Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Clinical Chairman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anton_meyer.jpg

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Jewish: In "You Can Choose Your Friends" He helps Victoria to console a Jewish patient after she receives a treif heart valve made from pig tissue, revealing that his father was Jewish while his mother was Christian (so not technically Jewish himself as he doesn't have a matrilineal link). He quotes from the Torah to encourage the patient to accept her situation, but never shows any signs of holding any sort of belief himself.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Meyer prides himself on his emotional detachment and excels at his job as a result, while his sister is shown to be much more openly tender-hearted and this leaves her vulnerable to exploitation by her husband.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: After he and Nick perform a caesarian on a plane while on a flight back from a conference, he doesn't accept the free flights and hotel in Paris offered as compensation. Instead, he sends the airline a bill for his services, which they initially balk at but do eventually cough up when Meyer gets his solicitors involved. He ends up donating the fee to charity, explaining to Nick that he wanted to make a point about the airline stocking planes with medical equipment without hiring people who are actually qualified to use it in an emergency, and warns Nick not to tell anyone about the donation.
    • On another occasion, he intercedes on Jazz's behalf when the hospital trust offer her an extremely paltry ex-gratia payment as compensation for being stabbed on the job, getting her a much more substantial payout, but denies he ever did anything when she thanks him for it.
  • Immigrant Parents: His mother and father emigrated to Britain from Hungary. He doesn't say as much, but given his age and his Jewish heritage, one can assume that they left in flight from or immediately after The Holocaust. Given his comments to Nick below, he may not have been born in the UK himself either.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In "Chasing the Dragon", his sister, Hannah, is admitted with a rare heart condition that requires an immediate operation. They've been estranged for the past few years thanks to Greg, Hannah's narcissistic, controlling husband. Greg throws a fit at the idea of Meyer operating on Hannah, despite him being the only one being qualified to do so, because of his financial interest in Greg and Hannah's business. Meyer initially delegates to Nick but ultimately intervenes and saves Hannah's life. Having done so, he proceeds to
verbally eviscerate Greg for the way he's treated Hannah over the years:
Meyer: It was me. I operated on Hannah this afternoon. So is your solicitor going to speak to my solicitor?
Greg: He might very well.
Meyer: Well, it's a chance to make a bob or two, Greg. I'd hate to see you pass up an opportunity like that. You see, Hannah would have died if I hadn't intervened, but where does that leave you? More concerned about the money or keeping the wife alive? Tricky one.
Greg: You think you're so clever, don't you?
Meyer: Greg, compared to you, I'm Einstein. You know what she's been through. You know why she flunked out of medical school. You know she has a habit of picking up losers and that you are the last of a very long line. She's vulnerable, but then if she had any strength, she wouldn't have looked at you.
Greg: You've always been jealous. You can't stand anyone else looking after her.
Meyer: I've looked after you since the day you married her.
Greg: You get a tidy sum out of the restaurant.
Meyer: And I haven't touched it. It is in a bank, intact, just waiting for the moment when you completely foul up on my sister, which could be quite soon, because the lackey won't be working the way she has been. Tumour on the heart tends to slow people down, so what are you going to now, Greg? Can you get your hands dirty? Are you going to spend 12-15 hours slaving over a hot restaurant dealing with the waitresses rather than bedding them? You're a joke.
Greg: What you're forgetting is that Hannah is happy with me.
Meyer: I'm not forgetting it. I've always known it. Why do you think I was happy to allow things to go on as they are? Why did I tie the business down so tightly? To stop you running off with the profits. Yes, you're right, Greg, I'm sure she loves you. But you don't love her. Don't ever thank me for saving her - you know there's a strong chance you won't mean it.

  • Convenient Miscarriage: Subverted. Jazz had already decided on an abortion, and is upset that the miscarriage robbed her of the ability to exercise her autonomy over her own body.
