    Mister Immortal

Mister Immortal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5443570_glaven2016003_cov.jpg

Alter Ego: Craig Hollis

Notable Aliases: Mr. I

First Appearance: West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #46 (July 1989)

Team Affiliations: Great Lakes Avengers

Joined In: West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #46

A mutant with the power to never truly die, Craig Hollis is the founder of the eccentric superhero team known as the Great Lakes Avengers and was the team leader until the team moved to Detroit.
  • Blessed with Suck: Mr. Immortal's power is very useful, only not in superhero fights. The problem is that he is not invulnerable; his power doesn't work until he dies.
  • Complete Immortality: He really can't die, no matter how hard he tries.
  • Exploited Immunity: Mr. Immortal once talked Omnicidal Maniac Maelstrom into a Suicide Pact. To show his commitment, Mr. I went first. After Maelstrom followed through with his half of the bargain, Mister Immortal came back to life and switched off his doomsday machine.
  • Goal-Oriented Evolution: He is Homo Sapiens Supreme, the endstep of human evolution, a being that has evolved beyond death.
  • Imaginary Friend: Mr. Immortal's imaginary childhood friend turns out to be Deathurge.
  • Immortality Hurts: Since he only recovers from his injuries once he's dead, he suffers from pain like a regular person.
  • Logical Weakness: Sure, he can't die, but as he found out when facing the Thunderbolts, not immune to getting knocked out.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Announcing you've just learned you're Homo supreme in front of your friends will do that. Flatman, who actually is gay, thinks Mr. Immortal is trying to upstage him.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Whether Mr. Immortal's powers come from Deathurge, or Deathurge is merely helping him reach his destiny as Homo supreme.
  • Plan B Resolution: It's eventually revealed that he's a backup to merge with the consciousness of the universe at its end to become the Galactus-figure of the next, if for whatever reason Franklin Richards is unable to fulfill that role.
  • Primary-Color Champion: His costume is red and blue.
  • Red Shirt: Mr. Immortal is essentially a full red shirt army by himself. He even got a red shirt during Glx-Mas.
  • Ultimate Life Form: Homo Superior, mutants, are a step above normal humans, but Mr. Immortal is Homo Supreme, the step further above mutants.

  • Killed Off for Real: She was killed by Maelstrom.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Her pink skin reminds us she's female.

    Big Bertha

Big Bertha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7169367_great_lakes_avengers_vol_2_5.jpg

Alter Ego: Born: Ashley Crawford, Legally changed to: Bertha Crawford

Notable Aliases: Ample Amazon, Lady Volstagg

First Appearance: West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #46 (July 1989)

Team Affiliations: Great Lakes Avengers

Joined In:

Wisconsin's most famous super model, Ashley Crawford possesses the mutant ability to transform from trim and svelte to remarkably obese and back through the power of regurgitation.
  • Acrofatic: Big Bertha possess the attributes of a well-conditioned athlete regardless of her transformation state.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: She's not unattractive even in her fat form.
  • Brown Note: Watching Deadpool's unmasked face was enough to make her vomit.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Her powers are quite similar to Fred Dukes, The Blob. Unlike him she can at least change her weight at will.
  • Fat and Proud: In the 2016 series, she's never shown in her thin form, has shifted her career to being a plus-sized model, and refuses to use her powers to model as both before and after examples of a weight-loss program, especially when asked to look miserable for the before shot.
  • Leotard of Power: Wears a yellow leotard.
  • Modeling is Glamorous: Ashley Crawford is a stunning swimsuit model and enjoys a glamourous lifestyle (Deadpool is a huge fan), but her superheroine alter ego is superstrong but very obese. In order to return to her voluptuous swimsuit model figure, she has to puke up the excess mass, a nod to pervasive eating disorders in the modeling industry.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Being Wisconsin's most famous supermodel means she probably doesn't have much competition.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: Her thin form is pretty enough to be a swimsuit model.
  • Stout Strength: Big Bertha's major power—swelling up her body mass grants her immense strength and durability. At her heaviest, she can quite literally stop a truck moving at full speed.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Big Bertha's mutation allows her to swell her body fat immensely, going from a conventionally-thin supermodel to a super-sized, super-strong bruiser. She can undo this effect through "power puking."

Herald of Oblivion and member of the Great Lakes Avengers.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: He might be the Herald of Oblivion, but he's a cool guy.
  • The Grim Reaper: The cosmic entity Oblivion summoned him declaring that he could prove useful to him because of his connection to the Darkforce Dimension, akin to Deathurge, who had been recently captured by Mr. Immortal. Doorman therefore replaced Deathurge and became Oblivion's new angel of death.
  • Intangibility: A pretty esoteric example. His initial powerset can be most succinctly described as being a walking, person-shaped Portable Hole.
  • Pals with Jesus: Despite being literally a Herald of death, he still hangs out with his friends the Great Lake Avengers.
  • Teleportation with Drawbacks: He's a very powerful teleporter, but his range is limited to through a barrier if he lies against it.
