-> Voiced by: Creator/TatsuhisaSuzuki

The key character to the Fatal Frame series. Asou was a brilliant occult philosopher and scientist, with primary fields of interest in Japanese folklore and the spirit world, in the second half of the 19th century.

Asou took the latest Western technologies and introduced them to Japan, modifying them in an attempt to create devices that could capture supernatural phenomena, such as the Camera Obscura and similar.
----
* ArtifactOfDoom: He created several of them, leaving them to his descendants or fellow researchers.
* AscendedExtra: While he was mentioned continuously throughout the previous four Fatal Frame games, he finally appeared as a major character in the fifth one.
* FamousAncestor: He is one to Mio and Mayu Amakura, Yuu and Misaki Asou and Ren Hojou.
* HotScientist: Asou was quite handsome, as it turns out.
* LoveAtFirstSight: [[spoiler:With Ouse Kurosawa.]]
* ReluctantMadScientist: His curiosity was never intended to cause any harm to anyone, but most of his inventions were deemed dangerous or even cursed.
* RenaissanceMan: Asou was a brilliant inventor, skilled photographer and a gifted researcher that published numerous papers on his various works.
* SeekerArchetype: He devoted his life to explore the supernatural, travelling across Japan and studying his field, creating numerous devices as a result.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Asou or Aso. Some of the earlier games spelled him as Asou, while the English translation of the fifth game picked Aso.

!! Fatal Frame I

[[folder: Miku Hinasaki]]
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miku_8.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Appearance in I, III and V]]

-> Voiced By: Rika Wakusawa (Japanese), Rumiko Varnes (English, FFI), Creator/KimMaiGuest (English, FFIII)

Miku heads into the Himuro Mansion to look for her missing brother, Mafuyu. Inside the mansion, she finds the Camera Obscura that her brother left behind and ends up having to collect the five pieces of the Holy Mirror to appease Kirie's ghost, who has gone berserk.

She returns as a playable character in Fatal Frame III, though playing a smaller role than before. Still lamenting the death of her older brother, she is filled with guilt and haunted by dreams of the Manor of Sleep, following Mafuyu's spirit.

She has a daughter named Miu in Fatal Frame V, but went missing in the past, causing Miu to search for her.
----
* BareYourMidriff: Her default attire in III leaves a small strip of her stomach free.
* BigBrotherAttraction: It first came across as simple [[BigBrotherWorship worship]], but was more and more revealed to be a lot more.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Red/Crimson. [[spoiler:Her Holly tatoo in III is also a deep, red color.]]
* CripplingOverspecialization: Her abilities in Fatal Frame III. Her Sacred Stone (slows ghosts) and Double function (stacking a second charge on top of the first) make her the most powerful attacker. In exchange, she cannot equip any kind of lenses.
* DeathByChildbirth: A more unusual example. [[spoiler:Giving birth to a Shadowborn takes a huge toll on the human mother, which reduces their natural lifespan to a scant few years.]]
* HairDecorations: Never seen without her grandmother's hairclip.
* HotMom: She becomes one in V, when she has a daughter.
* ItsAllMyFault: She blames herself for not insisting on Mafuyu leaving the mansion with her and tells Rei that their being cursed is because of her, too.
* TheMagicGoesAway: Was supposed to at the end of I, but it ultimately didn't.
* MementoMacGuffin: Her grandmother's hairclip.
* MeaningfulName: Her name can be read as Deep Crimson, fitting with her color theme.
* MightyGlacier: The aforementioned Double function in III makes her the strongest attacker, but it takes longer to charge shots after using it, making her rather slow.
* MissingMom: Her mother committed suicide some time prior to the start of the series. In Fatal Frame V, Miku becomes one to her own daughter.
* [[DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou Mommy Had A Good Reason For Abandoning You]]: [[spoiler:Miku realized that she was going to die soon when Miu was three years old, so she left to spare her daughter having to see her die. By entering the box, Miku was artifically sustained for more than a decade, allowing mother and daughter to briefly reunite.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: She's technically in her late thirties in V, but looks much younger. [[spoiler:Justified, the Black Box kept her alive and likely prevented her from aging.]]
* PluckyGirl: Miku pushes through everything and does her best to keep her head up.
* PsychicPowers: She was born with a strong sixth sense.
* [[RedHeadedHero Redheaded Heroine]]: The American version of I lightened up her hair and gave it a minor, reddish tone. The other games left her hair its normal darkbrown.
* SailorFuku: Her default attire in I was modeled after one.
* ShesAllGrownUp: Played with. There's only a two year difference between I and III, but she is noticeably more fanservicey in the latter game.
* StepfordSmiler: She puts up a cheerful front in III, leaving Rei unaware of what she has been through.
* VirginSacrifice: [[spoiler:Miu discovers her sealed inside a black box, having been lured into the mountains years ago.]]
* YouDontLookLikeYou: The localized version of Fatal Frame I altered Miku's appearance. [[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/fatalframe/images/9/97/Miku_face_comparison.png/revision/latest?cb=20100329211658 Her facial features]] were made less round, her eyes smaller, her skin made a little less pale and she was given red lipstick to make her more likely to [[CulturalTranslation appeal]] to a Western audience. Her [[http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/fatalframe/images/0/01/Miku_Hinasaki2.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/208?cb=20100415211930 localized outfit]] removed the SailorFuku-esque ribbon from her blouse and altered her black choker into a golden color, in order to make her seem more mature.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:Giving birth to Miu severely shortened her lifespan.]]
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears a Grade B in III.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mafuyu Hinasaki]]
[[quoteright:150:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mafuyu_5.png]]

-> Voiced By: [=Jun'ichi=] Kanemaru (Japanese), Dominic Allen (English)

Miku's older brother and only remaining family. He headed into Himuro Mansion a while ago to find the truth behind the disappearances of his professor Takamine and colleagues. Mafuyu eventually disappears in the mansion as well, leading his sister to follow him.
----
* BigBrotherInstinct: He shows a strong desire to protect others.
* HeroicSpirit: His reason for going to Himuro Mansion was simply to find and hopefully rescue his professor and his team.
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler:Mafuyu decides to remain with Kirie at the Hellgate, so that Kirie will never be alone again, instead of escaping the mansion with his sister.]]
* IdenticalStranger: Mafuyu looks remarkably similar to Kirie's lover. Miku even mistook the two, when she saw him during a flashback of Kirie's memories.
* MissingMom: His mother committed suicide some time ago.
* NiceGuy: Miku describes him as extremely kind.
* PromotionToParent: He took on the role, after his mother committed suicide.
* PsychicPowers: He possesses a rather strong sixth sense, just like Miku.

[[caption-width-right:300:Malevolent & Benevolent]]

-> Voiced By: Yoko Yamamoto (Japanese), Leene Hardt (English)

Kirie lived at the Himuro Mansion and was raised to become the sacrifice of the Rope Ritual. However, when she fell in love and become conflicted, the ritual failed and the Hellgate was thrown open, unleashing the Malice over the mansion.

Now Kirie haunts the mansion as a malevolent spirit that kills anyone who crosses her, with her untainted half roaming the place to help people.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Her diary can be found across the mansion, depicting her final days and conflicting emotions.
* BarrierMaiden: As the maiden of the Rope Shrine, her duty is to hold the Hellgate closed.
* BreakTheCutie: Her past involved being isolated from the outside world and having no meaningful human contact, even her few caretakers keeping themselves masked to avoid her forming an emotional bond. When she was old enough to perform the ritual, she was [[KillTheCutie killed]].
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: She had ropes tied around her wrist, ankles and neck, which were slowly tightened and tore her to pieces.
* DemonicPossession: The Malice possessed her spirit, making her hostile.
* HesitantSacrifice: She became hesitant to go through with the ritual, because she had fallen in love and didn't want to die.
* HumanoidAbomination: The embodiment of the Malice behind her, which is a blurry blob full of body pieces and haunted souls.
* InSeriesNickname: White Kimono for her benevolent spirit.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: The vengeful spirit that kills whoever crosses her and the younger, innocent version of herself that tries to help Miku at times.
* LoveHurts: Falling in love made her want to live, making her feel conflicted over fulfilling her duty and her desire to be with her lover.
* MightyGlacier: Her touch is deadly, but she moves very slowly.
* {{Miko}}: The Rope Shrine Maiden.
* MysteriousWaif: Girl in White, her untainted self.
* OneHitKill: If she touches Miku, she kills her instantly.
* PeekABangs: Most of her bangs cover her face in her malevolent form, but have a small gap that leaves one eye free.
* PowerFloats. The embodiment of the Malice seems to hold her aloft.
* PsychicPowers: It was believed that, since she was the last child to be caught during the Demon Tag ritual, she had the strongest of psychic abilities and the perfect sacrifice.
* StarCrossedLovers: Kirie fell in love with a young man that was visiting the mansion and fell in love with him, though her role required her to have no attachments to the living world. The priests murdered him and hid his body in an effort to 'protect' her.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: A typical example.
* VirginSacrifice: Her role in the Rope Ritual.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Her malevolent spirit wants everyone to experience her suffering.
* WomanInWhite: She always appears in a white kimono, part of her attire as a sacrifice.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Yae Munakata]]

-> Voiced By: Creator/Akemi Kanda (Japanese, FFII), Bianca Allen (English, FFI), Kar Wahlgren (English, FFII), Daphne Alexander (English, DCB)

Miku and Mafuyu's great-grandmother, who lived in the Himuro Mansion decades before the events of the first game. Eventually, her daughter disappeared and Yae committed suicide of this, as well as being driven insane by overexposure of the Camera Obscura.

Yae is reintroduced in Fatal Frame II as Yae Kurosawa, the twin sister of Sae. She was supposed to take part in the Strangling Ritual with her, but escaped the village and said fate, unwittingly beginning the downfall of Minakami Village.
----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Yae was supposed to become one due to the Strangling Ritual in II, but seeing the effects of the Repentance have traumatized her so much that she repressed said memories.
* ApocalypticLog: Lady's Diary in I and the Butterfly Diaries in II.
* BreakTheCutie: She lost her entire village in a disaster that she indirectly caused, repressed said memories and later had her daughter disappear, while she was also being driven insane by the Camera Obscura.
* DrivenToSuicide: The camera's power drove her insane and her daughter's disappearance were the final straw, causing Yae to hang herself.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: What she saw through the Camera Obscura confused and scared her, finally driving her insane.
* [[IdenticalGrandson Identical Granddaughter]]: Her granddaughter, Miyuki, looks exactly like her, causing Miku to remember her mother's suicide when she sees Yae's spirit in the Himuro Mansion.
* IllGirl: She was mentioned to have been ill as an adult.
* InSeriesNickname: Hanged Woman in I.
* IronicEcho: She died through strangulation, just like her twin sister decades ago.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: She lost her memories of the Minakami Village; likely a coping mechanism of repressing it for having caused the disaster and part of her soul being trapped in the village.
* LateToTheTragedy: Yae went back for Sae, when they got separated while escaping the village, but she got lost in the woods. She only managed to make it back to the village ''after'' the Repentance had already occured.
* PosthumousCharacter: She has been long dead by the time the series began.
* PsychicPowers: It's unknown how long she's had them, but they were amplified by the Camera Obscura and drove her insane. Her great-grandchildren inherited her powers.
* SoleSurvivor: The only person to have survived the Repentance.
* SurvivorsGuilt: She wanted to avoid this fate, hence she tried to escape with Sae. But Sae was captured and Yae felt guilty, after all.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her deciding to run away from the village, rather than go through the Strangling Ritual despite its potential of failing, was what allowed the Repentance to occur.
* VirginSacrifice: She was intended to be a part of one for the Strangling Ritual.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Ryozo Munakata]]

Miku and Mafuyu's great-grandfather, who moved his family into the Himuro Mansion decades before the events of the game. As a folklorist, he was interested and quite eager in studying the lost rituals of the Himuros. But this led to his daughter's disappearance, Yae's suicide and his own death.

He returns as a minorly important character in Fatal Frame II, with flashbacks telling of his time in Minakami Village. He headed there with his scholar friend, in order to find out what happened to his old friend, Itsuki. Ryozo helped with Yae's escape from the village.
----
* ApocalypticLog: The Green Diary and Research Notes.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana in II.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: His interest in the ''brutal murders'' and ''dark rituals'' of Himuro Mansion made him move there with his family. The curse of the mansion drove his wife insane and to suicide and his daughter was kidnapped by spirits. By the time he realized what a mistake this was, he only has a little time left himself.
* InSeriesNickname: Folklorist.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He regretted his decision to move to the mansion, after his wife's death.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His minor role in helping Yae escape from the village, which resulted in the Repentance destroying the village. His move to Himuro Mansion led to his family being destroyed.

* GoMadFromTheRevelation: The visions she got from the mansion and spirits drove her insane, since she was incapable of handling what she saw.
* InSeriesNickname: Assistant.

* SubordinateExcuse: The Zero novel hints that she had a romantic relationship with her employer.

!Fatal Frame II

[[folder: Mio Amakura]]
!!Mio Amakura
->Voiced by: Creator/AkemiKanda (Japanese), Creator/KariWahlgren (English, [=FF2=]), Daphne Alexander (English, [=FF2=]: Deep Crimson Butterfly)
[[quoteright:167:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mioamakura.png]]

The protagonist of Fatal Frame II and Mayu's younger twin. She has a weaker sixth sense, so she isn't as perceptive about the ghosts as Mayu, but this also makes her more resistant to their influence. Mio is very protective about her sister, feeling responsible for her leg wound years ago, and so she looks after her every single day.

Mio comes back in Fatal Frame III, but not as a playable character. Still lamenting Mayu's death, she is afflicted by the Tattooed Curse, and her uncle Kei is trying to rescue her.

* AngstySurvivingTwin: In the third game.
* BalefulPolymorph: [[spoiler: In the Deeper Crimson butterfly's Frozen Butterfly Ending, the crimson butterfly may be Mio after Mayu strangled her]].
* TheCaretaker: To her sister, Mayu.
* CreepyDoll: [[spoiler:The Frozen Butterfly ending shows that Mayu, after killing Mio, has begun to use her as a doll. She's putting make up on Mio's dead face and cuddles her.]]
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: Her speed in the trailers.
* EyeScream: [[spoiler: In the "Nightmare Ending", she finds out why you aren't supposed to look into [[HellGate the Hellish Abyss]] the hard way.]]
* TheHero: She gets to be this in the good endings of Fatal Frame II, [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming specially in the best one.]]
* HeroicBSOD: Upon realizing [[spoiler:she just killed her own sister.]]
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Her hair is layered outward, with her fringe parted and swept to the side. Her clothing evokes a more active person in comparison to Mayu.
* InelegantBlubbering: Falls into this in the canon ending [[spoiler:after chasing her sister's butterfly form and pleading for forgiveness]].
* KilledOffscreen: [[spoiler:In the Frozen Butterfly ending, the camera cuts away just as Mayu's hands grab Mio's throat. When the camera returns, Mayu is looking unblinkingly towards the camera.]]
* MamaBear[=/=]/KnightTemplarBigBrother: There's nothing she wouldn't do for her sister, and by the old rules she is considered the older twin.
* SkirtOverSlacks: Her iconic outfit is a skirt over leggings.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:After strangling Mayu and completing the ritual, she realizes what she had done. She chases after Mayu in her butterfly form and apologizes.]]
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Subverted, but a specially rare case of a girl having this attitude.
* {{Protectorate}}: Mayu for her. In the non-canon BadEnding, she becomes this to Mayu herself.
* PsychicPowers: Her powers are weaker than her sister's, but grow in strength as she explorers the village.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: She may have fallen victim to the Curse in the non-canon BadEnding of the third game.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: Her attitude towards Mayu, which seems to extent even after she [[spoiler:loses her sight for her.]]
* TogetherInDeath: With Mayu in ''Deep Crimson Butterfly'', if you got the "Shadow Festival" ending.
* TraumaCongaLine: Type C. First, she's left feeling guilty for Mayu's childhood injury, then spirited away to a nightmarish village where she's forced to kill her sister to leave, then she's forced to revisit the trauma all over again in her dreams.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mayu Amakura]]
!!Mayu Amakura
->Voiced by: Creator/AyakoKawasumi (Japanese), Creator/KimMaiGuest (English, [=FF2=]), Patricia Gannon (English, [=FF2=]: Deep Crimson Butterfly)
[[quoteright:164:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mayuamakura.png]]

Mio's older, calm, reserved and considerate twin. She's got a very strong sixth sense, which makes her vulnerable to the influence of ghosts. This leads to get being possessed by Sae, causing quite a troublesome situation as the person Mio has to rescue is at the same time the person who could mean her immediate death.

* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Her hairstyle is layered close to her head, and her fringe is straight and covers more of her forehead. Her clothing also gives a more demure feeling, compared to Mio's.
* IfICantHaveYou: In ''Deep Crimson Butterfly'', [[spoiler: she actually ''murders'' Mio when the latter refuses to perform the ritual in one ending]].
* KubrickStare: If you pay very close attention to her when she passes the screen, she stares at the camera.
* TheLoad: That said, she makes for an excellent distraction for attacking ghosts.
* LaughingMad: [[spoiler: In ''Deep Crimson Butterfly's'' Frozen Butterfly ending. She must've been taking lessons from Sae.]]
* ManipulativeBitch: In the Japanese Fanbook (as well as the novelization), it is revealed that [[spoiler: when they were children, Mayu fell down the cliff on purpose so Mio wouldn't leave her behind, and has been using her injury to control Mio ever since.]] This is pretty much confirmed on [[spoiler: the final battle against Sae, Mayu can be heard admitting she fell on purpose just to have Mio for herself only, among other things like "Mio always thinks about me... and she will do whatever I say."]]
* MeaningfulName: Mayu means "cocoon" tying in with the butterfly theme. [[spoiler: She does indeed become one in the default ending.]]
* MoreThanMindControl: It's unclear if Mayu's {{Yandere}} tendencies are a result of Sae's posession or her own free will. While the original game endings seem to imply it is the former, the remake's extra endings imply towards the latter.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: She says this several times, and seems to fear it more than anything.
* {{Protectorate}}: Mio is fiercely protective of her.
* PsychicPowers: Possessed strong powers, which made her vulnerable to possession and influence by Sae.
* TogetherInDeath: In the ''Shadow Festival'' ending.
* VideogameCaringPotential: She's quite weak, and will plead with Mio if the player runs too far ahead of her.
* VirginSacrifice: [[spoiler: Sacrificed to end the curse over the village]].
* {{Yandere}}: Her relationship with Mio in general. She even kills Mio in one ending, just to keep her with her for good.
* YouAreWorthHell: For Mio, she clearly was.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Itsuki Tachibana]]
!!Itsuki Tachibana
->Voiced by: Creator/SoichiroHoshi (Japanese), Sam Saletta (English), Cameron Stewart (English, [=FF2=]: Deep Crimson Butterfly)
[[quoteright:164:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itsuki.png]]

A white-haired young boy that is mysteriously imprisoned. Mio encounters him while exploring the lost village, and he'll assist Mio in his attempt to rescue Mayu, although most of what he says will cause confusion to the player.

* AngstySurvivingTwin: His failure to properly perform the ritual meant that his brother, Mutsuki, died for nothing. He killed himself to join his brother after he thought the Kurosawa Twins escaped.
* ApocalypticLog: The Bound Diaries and Crystal Ore; labelled a Quartz Stone in the remake.
* DeadAllAlong: Unsurprisingly, he too is a Ghost.
* DrivenToSuicide: He hung himself.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He's not the hero of the story, but ''still''...
* InSeriesNickname: Imprisoned Boy.
* LockedIntoStrangeness: He has white hair, as a result of his own Ritual.
* MrExposition: Guess who you're gonna go for every time you need answers.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: His determination to stop the ritual ended in the complete destruction of the village, and the curse that continued to kill people nearly a century later.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He won't cease referring to Mio as "Yae" and Mayu as "Sae".
* VirginSacrifice: He performed the ritual and killed his brother.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Sae Kurosawa]]
!!Sae Kurosawa
->Voiced by: Creator/AyakoKawasumi (Japanese), Creator/KimMaiGuest (English, [=FF2=]), Patricia Gannon (English, [=FF2=]: Deep Crimson Butterfly)
[[quoteright:168:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sae17.png]]

A twin shrine maiden who particularly had been always anxious about participating in the sacrificial ritual so she would ''become one'' with her twin sister, Yae. When Itsuki wanted to help Sae and Yae to escape the ritual, though, she apparently intentionally fell behind, hoping that Yae would return for her so they would fulfill the ritual. But Yae never came back, and so she was sentenced to do the ritual alone, which didn't go well.

* AllLoveIsUnrequited: She was close to Itsuki, but because he's the older "Remaining" twin and she is the younger twin that will be sacrificed, they can't be together.
* ApocalypticLog: The Bound Diaries and Fluorite stones.
* AxCrazy: On par with Lord Himuro.
* BigBad: Of Fatal Frame II
** BigBadDuumvirate: With the Kusabi though she is the main antagonist and plays a more active role in the story.
* BreakTheCutie: As tradition.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Generates a red mist to protect against the Camera Obscura during the final battle with her, and come on, how many ghosts are smart enough to realize that the only weapon in the protagonist's arsenal is the Camera Obscura?
* DeathGlare: It's a blink-and-you'll-miss moment, but in the remake of the [[spoiler: Lingering Scent ending]], the look on her face as she strangles Mio is... quite unsettling.
** TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou: And the fact that she's looking ''directly at you'' doesn't help.
* DyingAlone: Hanged alone to try and complete the ritual without Yae.
* DualBoss: One mission has you fighting both her ''and'' the Kusabi.
* EvilBrit: Has a British accent in the remake.
* EvilLaugh: A particularly nightmarish one.
* FinalBoss: On harder difficulties only. Subverted in the Wii remake- she's the final boss for ALL difficulties if the Kusabi is beaten in under five minutes.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Sanguine among the four main antagonists.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: From a sacrificial maiden to slaughtering her entire village.
* GigglingVillain: In sharp contrast to the other main Ghosts, she constantly laughs.
* TheHyena: She cackles constantly.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: The small break in her bangs distinguishes her from Yae.
* InSeriesNickname: Bloody Kimono (Hostile), White Kimono (Non-Hostile)
* LaughingMad: Insane and constantly giggling.
* LightIsNotGood: The most vibrant colored out of the four main antagonists and the most psychotic.
* ManipulativeBitch: [[spoiler:Like Mayu, she fell ''on purpose'' to try and get her sister caught in order to force her into the ritual, without any consideration for her sister's feelings. Unlike Mayu, her plan backfired ''horribly''.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her ghost name, ''Bloody Kimono''
* OneHitKill: Notably the only final boss [[AvertedTrope without one]], though she makes up for it with her defenses and speed. Played straight in the updated Wii version, where her touch ''is'' just as deadly as the Kusabi's.
* PerpetualSmiler: She has a constant smile on her face, seeming to enjoy the horrors she's unleashed.
* PutTheLaughterInSlaughter: She's got a lot of laugh tropes, huh?

* BeautyMark: She has one beneath her eye.

* InformedAttribute: Rei claims she's the opposite of Yuu who was quiet and gentle, but this doesn't really show. Then again, she ''is'' severely depressed.

* ApocalypticLog: The Research Notes, and his letters to Yuu.
* BadassBookworm: Comes with being one of the series' folklorists who can actually fight off ghosts and not end up one of them. Even then, up until you play his chapters he had no Camera Obscura and had to hide often, hence his ability and special filament. Regardless of how weak his sixth sense is, the man's certainly something to have been sneaking around a haunted manor for so long (the extent of his tattoos show that he's been in the manor the longest out of the three).
** [[spoiler:In the good and [[WordOfGod apparently canon]] ending, he becomes the first male character to survive the game.]]
* CantCatchUp: In a somewhat different way than most examples. Being the only playable man in Fatal Frame III, he's stronger than the girls and so he can move heavy objects they can't. But his sixth sense is said to be weaker than theirs, which results in his attacks being overall inferior, and that's when he has a camera to begin with.
** GradualGrinder: His Camera Obscura though is best used to chip away at a spirit's health with rapid combos and bonuses, as he can't charge it to levels as high as Rei or Miku.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Indigo, if his clothing and tattoos are to go by.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:He delivers this for Rei near the end.]]
* IdenticalStranger: To Akito Kashiwagi, Kyouka Kuze's missing lover. As the ghost Brushing Woman, she is not happy to see him.
* MrExposition: Subverted. His chapters are where you usually find the documents that explain the Kuze Family and their rituals, that which lead up to the existence of the Tattoo Curse and the Manor of Sleep.
* MeaningfulName: The character for his name means 'firefly', [[spoiler: referring to the light of hope he has for finding a way to end the curse. However, fireflies are also known for their brief lifespans.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: He's apparently this for Mio and Mayu.
* PocketProtector: [[spoiler: If you obtain Kyouka's Echo Stone Earring on a second playthrough or later, Reika will spare him at the end of Hour XII.]]
* PsychicPowers: He possesses ''very'' weak powers, especially in comparison to Rei and Miku.
