Reed Id Vant

  • Character Development: From an idealistic and unstable newcommer to a silent but capable individual in peace with himself. It takes a lot of effort, but Reed manages to become what Idgray should have been without Drassil's influence.
  • The Chosen One: Played with in spades. It seems at first he is this, being he is said to be Albion's reincarnation here to finish the archmage's quest in the world... except it's latter revealed to be the complete opposite: the is Idgray's reincarnation and he is Drassil's "chosen one", though this means no more than that the sword has fallen in love with him.
  • Determinator: Reed's main trait. He will simply not give up once he has a goal in mind.
  • Hard Head: It's mentioned a few times in the story his head is extremely tough, fitting his personality.
  • Humble Hero: Reed is an outsider from a small, isolated village, and it shows in his interactions.
  • Jumped at the Call: He is very excited to begin his adventure. Rather justified in story, as being the reincarnation of Idgray, he died with the desire to find the beauty in the world and to live experiences like his brother did.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Carries his sentient shield in battle. Even after later events of the story where he loses it, he tends to prefer forming shields with his seeler weapon as they are a big part of his legionarie-like fighting style.
  • Naïve Newcomer: During the first book especially, most of his dialogues are questions about the nature of things surrounding him.
  • Soul Power: Eventually uses seele, an art directly linked to the soul.

Reaper Assadan

Arksinad Eeel

........

Scarrow Arderaid

Number 6th of the Geral 21 and Reed's mentor, a hermit who moved to Vant running away from a tragic past.

  • Blow You Away: To astounding levels. He can send mail using air currents all over the world, and once he gets serious, summons a maiden storm that pins Skectral on the ground.
  • Break the Haughty: Said to have been smug and condescendant as a young man due to his power, but both learning of his inevitable death by prophecy and failing to protect his loved ones turns him into a kind, if broken, man.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Once he decides to face Skectral, he does so with his head held high despite knowing it means certain death for him.
  • Famed In-Story: Pretty much everyone outside Vant knows Scarrow, something which clues Reed in was precisely the reason he chose Vant for his retirement.
  • Forced into Evil: Skectral uses him as an envoy to expand his tyranny on the island, though Scarrow does his best to save as many as possible.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The only one of Dordo students who never gets to learn about Vannael's treachery, if only because the others decide it would break him even further. In fact, once Reed tells him what he knows of the king, Scarrow outright refuses to believe it.
  • The Mentor: To Reed, although he is unable to teach the boy anything of magic due to his natural lack of affinity to it. Still, his tutelage does help him in more than an occasion.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: He dies, as expected. However, its of note that this is expected by everyone in story, as there was a prophecy dictating a dragon would be his end.
  • My Greatest Failure: Many years ago, a different bone dragon named Karava settled in Scarrow's hometown, and Scarrow's failure to put a quick end to it led to the horrifying deaths of everyone he loved.
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: Much like Reed with Vant, Scarrow says to have felt this way about his own hometown as a young man.
  • The Lost Lenore: Lu, whom he failed to protect from Karava.
  • Red Baron: "The Grand Wind Mage".
  • Scars Are Forever: Keeps the burnt marks on his forehead from his battle against Karava.
  • Taking the Bullet: He uses the Seal of Calling to summon himself in front if Reed and take the attack destined to him, dying instantly to Skectral's lighting bolts.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Much of the moral of his story is him coming to terms with that, and then Reed learning a similar lesson when trying to bring him back.

Caxer "Cax" Id Vant

Reed's younger brother, who hides magical power beyond measure.

Ibmema Id Ossat

A stern veteran who acts as Scarrow's right hand man in the rebellion against Skectral.

Aminor Sirrah

A General from the city, a mute masked man with a close relationship with Bali.
  • Ambiguously Gay: He is implied to be Bali's lover.
  • The Voiceless: Never utters a word, and he is outright described as mute, although he does finally scream when Linith bites his burnt arm.
  • Enemy Mine: More for necessity than anything, but the man recognizes how suicidal is to attack Arksinad and Reaper when they join the fray against Buiht. Once the monster immolates itself, however...
  • Fragile Speedster: His Neu gives him short burts of acceleration.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Gets the least development of all the Generals before being killed by Shimari.

Linith Evenstar

A young Blessed from Baal, who serves directly under Tearu and works for the loyalist faction as a spy.
  • Damsel in Distress: Quite a few times, having to be rescued from Bali, then Aminor, and then Grimold, though she escapes from the last mostly on her own.
  • Precocious Crush: Grows one for Reed, though it dwindles after she sees the brutal way he disposed of Ragnar. It's later implied she will end up with Caxer.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Joins the group as a guide during book three.

Desma and Lialbe Evenstar

Linith's parents, who take in Reed when he strays from the group.

Reginald Laval

A doctor living in Diakaza who welcomes the trio when they arrive to the city, hoping to turn the to his cause.
  • The Medic
  • An Arm and a Leg: Ragnar severs his leg for hiding Linith from him.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Begs when Ragnar threatens the life of his wife and patients, though it doesn't do him any good.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: To a degree. He is the first person to conclude the Second Trial can only be won by rejecting Buiht's Caucax, though his advice falls on deaf ears.
