    You
The nameless protagonist of the game. You woke up in a strange prison of sorts in a bizarre dimension. Guided only by a shadow, you set out to escape.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Due to wearing a pink hood that obscures their face and body, it is hard to say what gender they have.
  • Heroic Mime: The player character never says a word. Oddly, their shadow, the benefactor, is quite talkative.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: You only have one life, and will die from one hit of anything. Fortunately, so does the Final Boss, your shadow.

    The Benefactor/Shadow
A strange voice that speaks to the protagonist and guides them to escape the prison. However, they are not the most reliable of guides.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Much like the protagonist, they have their face and any identifying features hidden in shadow. Fittingly, they are the same person.
  • Big Bad: They are the one who trapped the player inside the prison and want to make sure they never leave.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Their smile, combined with their Face Framed in Shadow, is rather sinister-looking and contributes to their untrustworthiness.
  • Death by Irony: The "benefactor", despite claiming to be a perfect mirror of the main character, dies by the one thing they can't copy: firing a spike.
  • Cyclops: The mysterious benefactor turns out to be one, late in the game- they have one big, creepy eye.
  • Enemy Within: The "benefactor" is actually your shadow, and has been lying to you to ensure you never leave the prison.
  • Enemy Without: At the very last room, they jump out of you and become the Final Boss.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: They have their face obscured to emphasize how shady they are. This is, however, subverted, as they reveal more and more of their face as time goes on. And it's not pretty.
  • Living Shadow: They are the protagonist's shadow who has been speaking to them as they go through the prison.
  • Mission Control Is Off Its Meds: The main gimmick is that the benefactor, who gives you the tutorials, cannot be trusted and will lie to you- even about the basic controls. It professes a desire to protect you and keep you safe while simultaneously giving orders that get your character killed if followed.
  • Missing Mission Control: The mysterious benefactor stops communicating with you after the first few levels. They come back for the endgame.
  • Mysterious Informant: The benefactor has a Face Framed in Shadow, and their identity becomes more of a mystery as you move through the game.
  • Nightmare Face: Their true face is composed of a single, giant beast-like eye and a Slasher Smile.
  • Obviously Evil: Even though they try to present themselves as an ally, it is transparent that they are up to no good. Between their Face Framed in Shadow, Cheshire Cat Grin, and constant lying about how to escape, which only worsens the more the game goes on, they are clearly not to be trusted.
  • Puzzle Boss: It is not fought like a traditional boss. Rather, they copy all your movements, and you must find a way to get them inside the gem pit, which will kill them.
  • Slasher Smile: What starts as a Cheshire Cat Grin becomes this after they return, becoming much wider and showing sharp teeth.
  • Taking You with Me: Their intention in the Final Boss battle; since they copy all your movements, if you try to kill them by jumping in the gem pit, you will die with them.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The mysterious benefactor gets more and more agitated as time goes on and you ignore their advice. It gets to the point where they leave halfway through the game, though return for the finale. Then they actively try to stop you if you get to the true end, pulling out a Slasher Smile and going on about how they want to keep you safe forever.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: They are weak to the throwing spikes. They're not able to duplicate your ability to throw them, and if timed correctly, throwing one cripples their ability to jump, forcing them to fall into the pit. This would not normally be considered all that weaksauce of a weakness, but nothing else in the entire game is the slightest bit vulnerable to it.
  • Yandere: Platonic-ish, towards the Player Character (who they are an Enemy Within towards). Their motivation for trying to keep the player trapped is that they want to 'protect' them, and they see the prison as a 'safe' place.
