Jack Curtis
A former bus driver who accidentally ran over a girl years ago. Currently, he's among the hundreds of other homeless, being homeless himself.
- The Reveal: As it turns out, Jack was the bus driver who accidentally ran over a young woman named Terry Chaney, a survivor of Flight 180.
Amy Tom
An NYPD member who likes metal sculpting. She was narrowly rescued from a Serial Killer by Jack, and becomes his confidant and love interest.
- Death by Irony: Metal sculpting is an art she likes. At the novel's end she slips on a coffee spill made when Jack panics and lands on a metal sculpture. She presumably dies from her injuries.
- Final Girl: Subverted. She ends up dying last from landing on a metal sculpture and Jack dying ahead of her from gunshots to his chest.
Joshua Cornell III
A former rapper currently working as a producer. He operates like a punk, but is actually fairly sophisticated. He represents the sense of hearing.
- Off with His Head!: He has his head cut off at the jawline by a platinum record launched through the air by his exploding equipment.
Katie Astin
A compassionate former child star, who now works as a popular talk show host and televangelist. She represents the sense of touch.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Katie was blinded by an exploding spotlight, which leads to her coming into contact with a live cable while groping blindly, electrocuting her.
- Nice Girl: She's polite and generous with Jack and Amy and believes in helping people.
Dominique Swann
A snobbish celebrated celebrity chef. She represents the sense of taste.
- Slashed Throat: Choked on a glass shard launched into her mouth by an exploding wine bottle.
- Supreme Chef: A celebrity chef.
Dawson Donahue
An upstart entrepreneur, who is in charge of the city's garbage pickup, but is incompetent in handling it. He represents the sense of smell.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: The unpleasant head of a poorly run company.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Crushed against a wall when his car explodes, due to a gas leak.
Chelsea Cox
A beautiful, but obnoxious, reporter. She represents the sense of sight.
- Eye Scream: Chelsea gets a two-pronged icicle through both of her eyes.
"John Doe"
An insane would-be serial killer plotting to murder different celebrities based on the five human senses as part of his bizarre ritual. He was shot in the face by Jack (who had foreseen what he would do) before he could start his killing spree, prompting Death into going after his intended victims.
- Boom, Headshot!: Dies when Jack takes Amy's pistol and pulls the trigger on his face.
- Serial Killer: A would-be serial killer had Jack not shot him in the face. This doesn't stop Death from going after his intended victims.
