Humans

    Shimoko Shimoda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suimoa.png

Though they say we can't take the offering... I am really starving...

The heroine of the game. She was tasked with bringing the offering to the Ou/King, but got hungry.

    Ebiko Ise
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ebib.png

Shimoko's best friend.

  • Biblical Motifs: She's based on Eve from The Bible. She's tempted to eat food, causing the events of the game to happen.
  • Demonic Possession: She gets possessed by the curse that ????? cast and is turned into the ghost lady.
  • It's All My Fault: Since she was the one who actually ate the offering, she blames herself for bringing the spirit invasion upon the village.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name sounds similar to Eve, see Biblical Motifs above.

    Akemi Hanatani
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a_85.png

A mysterious red-haired girl who claims to want to protect Shimoko.

  • Biblical Motifs: She's based on Jesus from The Bible. She is a kindhearted soul who acts as a mentor to Shimoda and Ebiko, helping them, and desires to protect the village from an evil tempter, and was betrayed by someone who was supposedly a follower — this ultimately leads to her sacrificing herself by allowing herself to be publicly murdered by the same people she is trying to protect. However, she is then resurrected with the help of her heavenly father, who is the village deity.
  • Mysterious Waif: She appears suddenly in Emiko's house and definitely has an air of mystery around her, as she has a lot of magical power and claims to want to protect Shimoko, but ????? claims that she is a monster. This turns out to be Malicious Slander on ?????'s part, though, and she really is good.
  • Secondary Character Title: Shimoko is the protagonist, though Akemi is ultimately the most important character since the story really revolves around her.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: She acts nice to Shimoko at first, but ?????'s warnings not to trust her make it seem like she is actually a villain. This is not the case at all — she is good all the way through.

    Katagiri Yuta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimimimi2i.png

Shimoko's neighbor.

  • Biblical Motifs: He's based on Judas from The Bible. He betrays Akemi to be sacrificed by the villagers, only to regret it and hang himself shortly after. However, unlike Judas, who did it for the money, Yuta does it in a misguided attempt to save the village.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He seems genuinely nice, but not long after, he is the one who suggests to the other villagers that they sacrifice the supposed outsider Akemi, completely uncaring if she is the one who actually ate the offerings, to avoid pissing off any of the actual villagers.
  • Childhood Friends: With Shimoko, Ebiko, and Shigemi.
  • Driven to Suicide: He hangs himself after offering Akemi to the villagers.
  • Meaningful Name: His name sounds similar to Judas, see Biblical Motifs above.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Yuta wants to stop the curse on the village, so he's willing to sacrifice Akemi in order to save it.

    Shigemi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/syasin.png

A friend of Shimoko who went missing.

    Ise Kyoko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haha_6.png

Emiko's mom who gets trapped in the basement. She asks Shimoko to free her.

  • Demonic Possession: She gets possessed by ?????.
  • Flying Face: She decapitates herself and becomes a floating head chasing Shimoko.
  • Off with His Head!: While possessed by ?????, her head dislodges itself and starts floating in the air.

    ?????

Akemi is the enemy! If you ally yourself with her, then you'll be eaten by these little ones, alright? You'll be killed, alright? Bow down before me now!

A white-haired girl who appears before Shimoda to warn her about someone she is traveling with. In truth, she is the one commanding the spirits to invade the village. She was once Akemi's maid and housekeeper, but when Akemi gave her a bit of power, she used it to usurp Akemi.

  • Biblical Motifs: She's based on Satan from The Bible.
  • Big Bad: She is the one controlling the spirits and attacking the village with the intent of enslaving everyone there.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She tries to make herself look like an ally to Shimoko, but when Shimoko realizes that she is the one responsible for the attack on the village, she tries to have her dogs kill her.
  • I'll Kill You!: She says this to Shimoko upon the latter calling her the real monster.
  • Kneel Before Zod: She tries to make Shimoko bow down to her in the final chapter, threatening to sic her Right Hand Attack Dogs on her if she doesn't.
  • No Name Given: Her actual name is never revealed; the text box only addresses her as ?????.
  • Minor Major Character: Despite being the Big Bad behind the spirits, she only has two scenes and a brief sighting afterwards.
  • My Name Is ???: Her text box calls her ?????. We never learn her real name.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes, and, though not immediately apparent, is the real Big Bad in control of an army of spirits. Goes well with her white hair.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The power of the Ou/King is keeping her outside the village, unable to penetrate it with her powers. As long as the offerings are made, the energy can recharge. Emiko eating the offering is what caused the barrier to shut down, allowing her to invade.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has white hair and is the real Big Bad, having usurped Akemi and attacking the village with spirits.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: She appears to Shimoko bloodied and beaten and tries to convince Shimoko that Akemi did it and cannot be trusted. This is a lie — she did it to herself to frame Akemi.

Spirits

    The Ou/King

Akemi's Father

The guardian deity of the village, who desires to punish the villagers because one of them ate his offering. In truth, the Ou/King is a mass of energy created by Akemi's father, who sought to protect the village from ?????'s evil plan to enslave them all.

  • Disc-One Final Boss: He is supposedly the antagonist who is sending the spirits to terrorize the village. But he is actually trying to protect the village from ?????, the one really summoning the spirits.
  • God Guise: Possibly — it's unclear just what he is, and his daughter, despite seeming human, has god-like powers such as resurrection. He may simply be a powerful magic user who tricked people into thinking he was a god, or he may very well be one.
  • Good All Along: He is not a vengeful god as it may have seemed, but a purely benevolent spirit who wants to protect the village.

    The Ghost Woman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/_658.png

A ghost woman who stalks Shimoda. Is actually a possessed Emiko.

  • Black Eyes of Evil: Has holes where her eyes should be.
  • The Heavy: She is the most frequent enemy Shimoko encounters.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: Resembles this, though she lacks the typical backstory of being wronged by a man, instead being possessed by ?????.

    Giant Face
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nininini.png

A massive face that shows up in Shimoko's house.

  • Puzzle Boss: If you enter without the shotgun, she kills you unavoidably. You need to first find the shotgun, then figure out you need to use it.
  • Warmup Boss: The first boss encounter in the game.

    The Statue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lll_8.png
THANK YOU FOR THE EYEBALL

A creepy statue blocking Shimoko's way in Emiko's house.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: It allows Shimoko to pass and even performs a Heroic Sacrifice to save her from the ghost woman because she was nice enough to return its missing eyeball.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: It looks like a disturbing, noodle-like creature with a bleeding eye socket, but it is the one spirit that never hurts Shimoko and even makes a Heroic Sacrifice to save her.
  • Eye Scream: Its left eyeball somehow got removed from its body, resulting in an empty, bleeding eye socket. You have to return it to progress. It is implied that the ghost woman ripped it out, seeing as she puts it in a book.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: It bars the ghost woman's way to allow Shimoko time to hide inside a nearby closet. The ghost woman kills it.

    Dolls
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llllllllllllll.png

A bunch of dolls who show up in the third area.

  • Creepy Doll: They have enlarged heads and beady eyes, and move around later on.
  • Final Boss: Of the first playthrough, as afterwards, the only obstacle that can kill Shimoko is an easily-defeatable enemy, though there are still two more areas left.
  • Flunky Boss: The Red Doll stands in one place while the yellow dolls chase Shimoko around.

    Spoiler Character

Shurafarl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wolfr.png

The red-masked woman from Oyadori No Ko, who appears in a second playthrough as the last boss.

  • The Cameo: She is from Oyadori No Ko and shows up to be the last boss.
  • True Final Boss: She is the last boss fought on a second playthrough, faced after the Red Doll, and is essentially the last boss, as afterwards, the only obstacle that can kill Shimoko is an easily-defeatable enemy, though there are still two more areas left.
