    Jasper Baratheon
  • A Father to His Men
  • Anti-Hero
  • Big Brother Instinct: Especially towards Myrcella.
  • Disney Death: Fakes his death during the siege of Harrenhal so his men can covertly kill off the defenders as they search the surrounding area for his remains.
  • Doting Parent: Toward his daughters.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Until the Purple Wedding.
  • Frontline General
  • Happily Married: To Arya.
  • Kick the Dog: Orders the deaths of every practitioner of the Red Faith in Westeros.
    • The Ruination of the Hellholt, in which he gives House Uller the Castamere treatment.
  • Generation Xerox: His wiping out of House Uller and its supporters is very similar to the destruction of Houses Reyne and Tarbeck conducted by his grandfather.
    • He's quite libidinous, like dear old dad. He stops after he gets married, however.
  • Pet the Dog: He's a loving husband, brother, and father.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Has his mother and maternal uncles killed when he learns of the twincest.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When provoked, Jasper's temper can explode with the force of a nuke. Only years of learning to control his temper keeps him in check.

    Robb Stark
    Sansa Stark
  • Break the Cutie
  • Put on a Bus: Is sent back to Winterfell after Robb bends the knee to Jasper. She's never seen again, though Robb mentions his intent to let her pick her husband rather than choose one for her.
    Arya Stark

House Targaryen

    Daenerys Targaryen
  • Action Girl: Subverted. She rides her dragons into battle, but she can't fight on her own.
  • Always Someone Better: Arya rubs it in Dany's face that Aegon is better than her.
  • Killed Off for Real
  • Humiliation Conga: Loses two of her dragons to the Ironborn, causing her anti-slavery campaign to crash and burn; said dragons are later killed by her enemies; a good chunk of her army is wiped out in one battle; and she and her entourage, along with her last dragon, are unceremoniously slaughtered at a dinner table.
  • Out-Gambitted: She can't play the game of thrones to save her life.
    Aegon Targaryen

House Lannister

    Tywin Lannister
  • Boring, but Practical: He considers overseeing the evacuation of Winterfell to be beneath him, until Jasper points out that (a)his absence will keep the Targaryen loyalists from using him as a political hostage and (b)he will destroy the corpses of anyone who dies during the march so that the White Walkers can't get them, whereas anyone else would insist on burying them. He accepts the reasoning.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Dies of old age sometime between Durran and Laena's Wedding and the beginning of Durran's rebellion.
  • Honest Advisor: His advice is blunt, but practical.
  • Old Soldier: Laena Targaryen notes that, even in his seventies, Tywin is still one of the most feared men in Westeros.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He disowns his children when their borderline treasonous activities are brought to light and he realizes there's nothing he can do to save them. They're all beheaded not long after.
  • Put on a Bus: Disappears after evacuating Winterfell. He makes a cameo appearance at Durran and Laena's wedding in the sequel.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: His personal philosophy.
  • Slasher Smile: He rarely smiles, but he gives a frightening one in Chapter 65 when Jasper instructs him to oversee the destruction of the Dragonpit.
