Main Characters
Suguru Koshigaya
The male main character of the fan fiction. Formerly a student in Asahigaoka Branch School, he is a third-year high school student in Suimei University of the Arts, who works as a Digital Artist at a publishing company. He is the childhood friend of Hikage Miyauchi.
- Adaptational Early Appearance: Being the main character of the fan fic, Suguru appears much, much earlier than in the source material.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Suguru is much smarter in the fan fiction, but it is often polarised with his temper.
- Adaptational Jerkass: Suguru, unlike his source material counterpart, is a problematic troublemaker, in spite of his diligence and genius, chiefly towards Soichiro, his best friend since junior high. This is largely because of his rather unsavoury past as a delinquent during his junior high.
- Adaptational Job Change: Not just a student, but Suguru is also a digital artist on an industry level, who even worked with Misaki before.
- Adaptation Personality Change: Suguru's personality in the source material is a rather goofy and silent teenager who only "talks" through hand gestures. Here, Suguru is more mature, in spite of his Hair-Trigger Temper, and diligent, to the point that he even sheds his old personality before the series happened.
- He is shown to be more unsmiling and cynical than in the source material.
- Age Lift: Suguru is 17 (later 18), as opposed to him being 14-15 in his source material.
- Ascended Extra: He is the main protagonist of the story.
- Big Damn Reunion: His reunion with Hikage, six years later.
- Childhood Friend: To Hikage Miyauchi, Konomi Fujimiya, and Kaede Kagayama, although the former is much closer.
- Foil: To Soichiro and Saori. He is the more short-tempered of the trio.
- Oh, Crap!: Suguru is shocked to realise to see Hikage Miyauchi in front of his house at the end of Chapter 1, even after six years have passed in the Prologue.
- Teen Genius: As per his canon counterpart, but it is more expanded in a way that he is even able to secure a job as a digital artist.
- Took a Level in Cynic: It is heavily implied that Suguru's separation with Hikage has caused him to have grown more cynical and distrustful as years go by, due to the fact that his feelings for her becomes completely unrequited, thanks to her Empty Promise to reconnect with him through mails, which did not happen.
- Uncle Pennybags: It is inferred that his work as a full-time digital artist, which is a highly lucrative job occupation, made it possible for him to own a house and even a motorcycle.
- The Voiceless: Used to. In the prologue, he was known to be silent and used to "talk" through gestures, much like in the canon, but we later found out that he is extremely conversational towards Hikage. As part of his personality change, however, he is no longer silent, thus making this a Subverted Trope.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Sometimes and even most of the times towards Soichiro.
Hikage Miyauchi
The female main character of the fan fiction. She is a former student of Asahigaoka Branch School, who later moved to Saitama during the events of Prologue, due to the closure of the branch school and her father's job in 2005. She is the childhood friend of Suguru Koshigaya.
- Adaptation Personality Change: Hikage, unlike in the canon, is no longer a Butt-Monkey, but a rather mature young adult dealing with daily-life problems. This is emphasised, when she reunites with Suguru for the first time in six years, who is shocked to find out that he lives next to Sakura Dormitory. However, some of her old traits are retained, including Middle Child Syndrome.
- Age Lift: Hikage is 17, as opposed to her being 15-16 in her source material.
- Ascended Extra: She is the secondary protagonist of the story.
- Childhood Friend: To Suguru Koshigaya, Konomi Fujimiya, and Kaede Kagayama, although the former is much closer.
- Hairstyle Inertia: Unlike in the canon where her hair is shoulder-length with a small side ponytail that accents her "city girl" appearance, Hikage's hair upon meeting Suguru at the end of Chapter 1 remains uncut, which is the same in the past, which is now waist-length, whom she puts it through a side ponytail.
Suimei High/Suiko Characters
Soichiro Tatebayashi
The President of Suiko's student council and Saori Himemiya's love interest. He is the best friend of Suguru.
- Foil: To Saori and Suguru. He is the more serious of the trio.
Saori Himemiya
A third-year high school student in Suiko and Soichiro's love interest, who is also the best friend of Suguru.
- Foil: To Suguru and Soichiro. He is the more optimistic of the trio.
Komari Koshigaya
A first-year high school student in Suiko, who is a former student of Asahigaoka Branch School, and is a talented mangaka. She is the younger sister of Suguru Koshigaya.
- Age Lift: Komari is 15, as opposed to her being 13-14 in her source material.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: In the present time, Komari has a shoulder-length hair, while in the past her hair was like in the canon.
- Improbable Age: Sort of. She is a mangaka since she was 13.
- Morality Chain: Oftentimes towards Suguru. She often tries her best to stop Suguru's questionable behaviour.
- Sequential Artist: She is a manga artist, who has already had created a shoujo manga series known as Love in the Rain. However, she cares little for fame.
