Spirit's Oath

  • Miranda's backstory is expounded on at length in this short novella...including how she came to have the company of Gin. Let us count the ways she proves herself to be utterly badass, shall we?
    • First, she completely rejects the idea of an Arranged Marriage, especially since she wasn't told of any such thing until a few days before the ceremony.
    • Second, when she realizes that her betrothed keeps a private zoo with a certain ghosthound kept captive, she argues for his clear intelligence.
    • Third, she snaps out of her 'dutiful daughter' mindset and proceeds to utterly wreck her wedding day, breaking Gin out of the zoo, riding him through the ceremony, and off into freedom.
    • And finally, fourth. When Banage solemly hands her a letter from her family a few days later, she rips it in half without opening it, informs him that she really doesn't care that they probably disowned her, and continues with her life in the Spirit Court without a speck of remorse.
  • Miranda's only tolerable relative, her older sister, supporting Miranda's choices as best she can while she herself is under quite a lot of scrutiny.

The Spirit Thief

  • The sheer chutzpah it takes to come up with a plan that hinges on kidnapping and ransoming a king. And how they flawlessly pull it off (well, the kidnapping part, anyways).
  • Josef completely wrecking Coriano once he finally reaches for the Heart of War.
  • Karon's introduction into the story as he manifests as a massive Magma Man and breaks into Renaud's throne room.
  • Eli completely shutting Mellinor up with his aura alone.

The Spirit Rebellion

  • The eponymous rebellion against the duke of Gaol is equal parts hilarious and badass, as the entire city rises against the man who tormented it and does its damnadest to kill it.
  • Credit where credit's due, the level of control the duke maintains is nothing short of astonishing.
  • The entirety of Josef's duel with Sten.

The Spirit Eater

  • Josef's second duel with Sten. The entire climax of the novel is pinned on what happens there, and for a good reason.
  • The League of Storms in action.
  • Nico fighting the Master for control and winning.
  • The Daughter of the Dead Mountain, inasmuch as she is terrifying, is also pretty awesome.
  • Tesset stopping Nico's demonseed with one hand.

The Spirit War

  • The Immortal Empress is without doubt the most badass villainess in the series.
    • Even before becoming Benehime's favourite, she gutted her would-be rapist and then escaped and fought off everyone chasing after her.
    • The world was introduced to her when she returned to the slavers' camp and slaughtered everyone inside.
    • Throughout the last eight hundred years, she conquered her entire continent, and wouldn't stop if it wasn't for losing Benehime's favour.
    • When she wishes to accompany her army to war, she makes her entire palace uproot itself and turn into a floating island, then commandeers sea currents to carry a fleet of a thousand ships towards Osera.
  • Josef using the Heart of War to cut open the Immortal Empress' palace ships.
  • Karon gleefully wrecking the fleet, as well as the Empress' response to this.
