Unmarked spoilers below!

  • Oakmont is overrun by Wylebeasts and Charles is a normal human being with only mild psychic powers to protect him. He proceeds to shoot, chop, and blow up his way through a massive horde of sanity blasting horrors with only some homemade first aid kits as well as some anti-psychotics to help him through the trauma.
  • Even in his backstory, Charles Reed is a Badass Normal as he manages to survive what is implied to be the events of Dagon and goes on to endure the events of a Bedlam House trying to "cure" him of his delusions.
  • Charles Reed even arriving in Oakmont is a major task because it is completely cut off from the rest of the world due to the supernatural flood that has almost destroyed it. Charles managed to charter a boat after tracking down the city, even though it wasn't listed on any maps.
  • Charles' detective skill is repeatedly shown off throughout the game as he continuously finds himself tracking down missing persons, objects, and doing research as a normal detective would. This despite the fact the city is suffering a post-apocalyptic breakdown in society.
    • Charles' skill as a detective is proven within minutes of his exiting of the boat as he promptly solves the murder of Albert Throgmorton despite the entire resources of the Oakmont PD being at their disposal. Mind you, being psychic helps.
    • "Lost At Sea" Has Charles not only investigate the expedition despite lacking any and all equipment but he finds diving equipment and goes hundreds of feet underwater, braves sea monsters, and finds a secret cave temple to Cthulhu in order to rescue (or condemn) the remaining expedition survivors.
    • Charles' investigation in "Through the Looking Glass" can expose the evils of Robert's father in his imprisonment of his eldest son's soul and the attempt to free it, potentially solving multiple murders as well as bringing their killers to justice.
    • Charles may either prevent hundreds of deaths by poisoning in "Quid Pro Quo" or he can actually make them happen in order to dramatically weaken the power of the EOD.
    • "Extra Hours" has Reed do a lot of investigation to what appears to be old fashioned hate crimes against gay members of the photography club. Reed proceeds to express a surprisingly progressive attitude for a man of the 1920s and works to help solve them.
  • Charles destroying an avatar of Shub-Niggurath as well as massacring the majority of the Redemptionist Church in their undersea temple.
  • Charles wipes out the remainder of the Oakmont chapter of the KKK. Particularly if it's after mocking their leader's title as a Grand Wizard by asking him to do card tricks or pull a rabbit out of his hat. You even get an achievement for it.
  • During "Silence is Golden", Charles Reed manages to banish Granny Weaver for 100 years by defeating her in single combat after summoning her. Given what a monster she is and the horror she inflicts on mortals, destroying her is one of the few morally unambiguous acts you can do in the game.
  • Reed both fleeing Oakmont to try to stay ahead of the apocalypse and sacrificing himself are attempts to save the world from Cthylla. They don't work but maximum points for trying.
