• After years of having nowhere near as much mainstream success as Genesis, "Sledgehammer" shot to the top of the US charts and proceeded to knock "Invisible Touch" right out of the number one spot.
  • The song's music video, meanwhile, won Gabriel ten MTV Video Music Awards (nine for the video, and the Video Vanguard Award for Gabriel himself)— to date, no other performer has won that many awards for a single video.
  • It is also the most-played music video in MTV history— more times than any video by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney, anybody. It got to the point where Gabriel wrote a letter to a network pleading for them to take it out of their rotation after endless months of play.
• "Biko" is credited with sparking interest in the anti-apartheid movement in the West, spurring the divestment and sanction movements that helped bring down South Africa's apartheid government.
