Awesome / Montreal Screwjob

Go To

  • The screwjob itself was certainly the second most controversial event in all of Professional Wrestling. However, there was more to it after the event. The wrestlers backstage were legitimately upset, and Mark Callaway, better known as The Undertaker, was that night's Papa Wolf. He sought out McMahon, who was hiding in his office, pounded on the door, and called out, "If you don't open this door and get your ass out here I'm going to knock it down and kick it." Vince did answer, and was told, "If you still want to have a company tomorrow you'd better apologize to Bret Hart." McMahon not only listened, but Taker put his career on the line and remained one of the top draws.
    • Similarly, Mick Foley quit that night in protest, although he retracted his resignation the next day because he decided that being able to feed his family was more important. Bret himself said that while he appreciated the support, he discouraged Foley and others from breaking their contracts for that very reason.
    • According to a Sports Illustrated article years after the fact, Bret claimed that after the show everyone was in the locker room, tense as hell about what was going to happen. There's Shawn in the corner of the locker room, clutching the title and sobbing like a baby. And then Vince McMahon enters the room, and even when Bret tells him that he has no interest in talking to him the boss makes it clear that he isn't going to leave. Bret soon realized that it was a sort of macho power play: Vince was trying to assert his dominance, and basically dared Bret to slap him or hit him... So Bret, knowing he'd only get one shot before the guys Vince had brought with him jumped him and it became a futile pull-apart scuffle between him and Vince, threw an uppercut and damn near knocked Vince out.
  • Rick Rude was working in the WWF on a pay by appearance basis, as a bodyguard for Shawn Michaels, but was a personal friend of Hart's for years, and not only left the company in disgust, but he called Eric Bischoff to personally vouch for Hart and confirm that what happened was a shoot. He also pulled the infamous gambit of being on Raw (in which his appearance was already taped) and Nitro (appearing live) at the same time, which left some egg on the face of Vince McMahon as well.
