Detective Conan: Magic File 2- Shinichi and Ran — The Memories from Mahjong Pieces and Tanabata is an OVA released in 2009. It is the third Magic File OVA and serves a a Prequel to the film Detective Conan Film 13: The Raven Chaser.
Kogoro plays Mahjong with his buddies while Ran reminisces on an incident from middle school.
This OVA provides examples of:
- Affectionate Nickname: Two of Kogoro’s Mahjong buddies refers to him as “Mouri-Chan”.
- Berserk Button: Insinuating Kouda’s wife is having an affair in his absence really riles him up.
- Edutainment Show: Agasa gives an in-depth explanation on Mahjong to the Detective Boys.
- Jerkass: The brat behind Ran in class later runs to her in the street to tease her about her dysfunctional family. Unprovoked.
- Imagine Spot: When close to getting an 1-Pin Kogoro imagines himself as a baseball player striking a home run.
- Lampshade Hanging: As the anime’s foremost Deadpan Snarker, Conan does not miss a chance to quip that Agasa taught the Detective Boys all about Mahjong to explain Kogoro’s drunken blunder.
- Prequel: To the aforementioned film. The OVA ends with the Detective Boys telling Conan to join them in beetle hunting.
