Hoist the Sails! note

"Don’t tell me that was the treasure…the map that Anne Bonnie left behind wasn’t a map for treasure. She was just trying to send a message to Mary Read, who was in jail."
Conan Edogawa

Detective Conan: Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure is the 11th Detective Conan Theatrical Film in the franchise. It was directed by Yasuichiro Yamamoto, written by Hiroshi Kashiwabara, produced by both Masahito Yoshioka and Michihiko Suwa and scored by Katsuo Ono. It was released on April 21, 2007.

The Isle of Koumi is a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean. On the island, people pass an old legend down from generation to generation that there was the Seabed Palace, an ancient ruin at the bottom of the sea, where the treasure of 2 female pirates, Anne Bonnie & Mary Reed (who really existed 300 years ago), was left. When Conan and his friends visit Koumi Island while on vacation, they meet some treasure hunters and a swashbuckling adventure begins.

Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure provides examples of:

  • Action Prologue : The film opens as Officers Miwako Sato and Wataru Takagi are in hot pursuit of two criminals dressed as Lupin III and Fujiko Mine.
  • Big Bad Ensemble:
    • On one hand, there's the ruthless treasure hunter and internationally wanted criminal Mitsushi Matsumoto, who steals the weapons of Anne Bonny and Mary Read to gain access to the hidden treasure, and alongside his lackey kidnaps Ran and Sonoko, leading to the final act of the film.
    • On the other hand, there's tourist executive Jouji Iwanaga, who sets up a treasure-hunting activity to find someone who can solve Bonny's 300-year old riddle, and murders Matsumoto's other lackey (alongside attempting to murder the other two treasure hunters) in a bid to get to it first.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ran and Sonoko are held hostage by the treasure hunters for a good chunk of the movie’s third act.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Sonoko gets a good portion of screentime she is usually not allowed. Unfortunately, she does not get to do much.
  • Running Gag: As usual, Agasa asks the Detective Boys a pun-based riddle.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: After 300 years, the pirate ship Anne Bonny hid immediately is destroyed once it surfaces from being under water.
