Blue Butterfly Fish (often abbreviated to just B.B. Fish by fans and most official sources) is a mid 90s OVA about a diver named Ushio and his group of friends exploring a tropical paradise for the legendary Blue Butterfly Fish. That's... about it actually as far as plot details go. Most of the anime's half hour runtime is composed of shots of the friends goofing off, going diving and admiring the natural beauty all around them. If you're looking for intense action and violence you won't find much of it here as the OVA has a strong focus on relaxed slow-paced "slice of life" antics more than anything else.

Blue Butterfly Fish provides examples of:

  • Bat Scare: Happens when a couple of the girls go exploring in an underwater cave system.
  • Excuse Plot: A group of friends go searching for a rare fish in a tropical paradise and screw around with a couple local girls while swimming, diving and partying.
  • Fanservice: B.B. Fish is set in a tropical location and centers around swimming and diving so expect plenty of attractive women in revealing clothing throughout. There are even a couple of nude scenes sprinkled in as well, though they tend to only last a few seconds at a time.
  • Food Porn: When the gang go to eat dinner with a couple of the local island girls the food they prepared is all shown in highly realistic and mouthwatering detail. However, there is also some...
  • Foreign Queasine: Bat soup, anyone?
  • Ocean Awe: It's an OVA centered around swimming and diving in a tropical paradise, expect lots of gorgeous shots of the characters having fun in the water. The main character is even implied to have some sort of supernatural power relating to the ocean.
  • Rising Water, Rising Tension: Happens at the climax when one of the main characters gets herself trapped inside a rapidly flooding cave after losing her breathing apparatus. Ushio manages to dive in and save her just in the nick of time.
  • Scenery Porn: The main reason to check the OVA out. You won't find much of a story here beyond a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it details but the backgrounds and environments are all incredibly visually interesting and stunning in design. From a few long shots of sandy beaches and the ocean to deep blue seafloors and caverns there's always something striking for everyone to see.
