Maginot Chapter 7, Part 1: Bait and Switch

Chapter 7 of the Maginot manga is apparently divided into multiple parts, so here's the first one.

As Miho is shocked over the new development, Eclair exults, glad to have caught the StuG in the trap. Eclair is convinced that they have the match in the bag, but Hippo Team retreats, and the R35, distressed, relays the news to Eclari, who is not happy to hear it.

Meanwhile, Hippo Team regroups with Miho, who laments not noticing that there were only four of Maginot's tanks, believing that "anyone should have noticed something this simple". She's on the cusp of another realization when Hana alerts her to Maginot's tanks moving, and Miho is shocked that Maginot has changed their tactics, a realization that Momo has as well.

The team begins to panic, exacerbated by Miho's delay in giving orders, and Rabbit Team is especially panicking, and Miho, blames herself for her inaccurate assumptions about the enemy's tactics. Meanwhile, Fondue is amused at the enemy's loss of discipline, and Gallette simply remarks "absurd." Miho orders a shell to be fired to disperse the enemy, but the others begin to huddle together, much to Miho's horror. Thankfully, though, Anzu decides to call out for them to not get clumped together, since it's Maginot's territory, and Miho, building off of that, orders them to keep moving, and they do. One has to wonder if things really have gotten desperate enough for Anzu to step up, since she did not intervene in any such way in the battles with Saunders and Anzio, actual tournament matches.

Yukari thanks Miho for giving the vital orders, but Miho says that the president is the one who deserves the credit, saying that because they panicked, they would have gotten annihilated if they had stayed like that, with Yukari pointing out how thin the armor is on the Panzer IV, Pz38(t) and Type 89. As the Student Council shifts back into their typical mode of operations, Miho then orders Saori to transmit the next plan to the others, and this part of the chapter ends.

All in all, it was an interesting development in the battle that gave Maginot a temporary advantage, but this manga does seem to overplay Miho's Heroic Self-Deprecation, which was, by comparison, relatively understated in the original series. When things went wrong, we didn't hear her mentally beating herself up over it.

This is possibly because characters like Miho, who start out as relatively meek and timid, but end up taking a level in badass without becoming arrogant can be difficult to portray well. Some takes on those characters tend to go too far, but others tend to forget that the characters have improved, leaving them much the same as they were at the beginning. Granted, Maginot's manga is fairly close to the beginning of the series, but it's still unfortunate that they're underestimating Miho's confidence.

Next Installment: Miho turns the tables on Maginot.
