MLLSD Chapter 24: Terror From The Deep

The chapter starts with the narrator talking about her(?) childhood and feeling lonely when looking at the stars., wondering if there are aliens out there, until an invader came from the sea.

It's a huge monster known as Araippe, which looks like the stuffed animal Maho got. It attacks Oarai, forcing the civilians to evacuate to the hills or school carrier. An old woman prays for mercy, but a younger man reassures her that they can evacuate with the ferry, and that Oarai has arrived.

Oarai's first five tanks arrive, and Anglerfish strikes the target head on. Yukari's impressed, but Hana modestly says that it's a large target and can't be missed, although getting closer would make it difficult to hit because they'd have to aim higher, a factor Mako decides to take into consideration. Saori wonders if it'll become less efficient this way, but Erwin says Araippe is turning this way and wants to fight, rather than flee. Miho says they will need to buy time for the evacuation by luring Araippe to the maneuvering grounds, while keeping damage (to the town?) to a minimum. Even though they could only prepare five tanks in time, they'll do what they can, and begin operation Wandaba. Yuuki asks what a "Wandaba" is, and Aya doesn't know but says it sounds fun (a note says that it's a theme/entry song from the Ultraman series; one would think the film buffs of Rabbit Tea would have picked up on that), prompting Azusa to tell them to stay focused. Saki seems even more spacey than usual, and the others try to convince her that "there'll be a chance."

As Erwin notes that they can hit the monster with their eyes closed, there's someone who can't hit it with her eyes open- who else but Momo? Yuzu teases her about not hitting something this big, while Momo says that it's difficult to hit because it's big, and Anzu proposes taking over; given that this is an actual emergency, one would think she would do so by now. Yukari says that the monster is slow moving and won't be able to get them as long as they keep their distance, much to Rabbit Team's shock, although Mako reassures them that "it's slower than shells."

Duck Team decides to go in, with Norko their tank unable to do any damage without a point-blank hit, although Taeko suggests that even that might be a futile effort. It is futile for a different reason; it ends up getting them grabbed by one of the tentacles. Hana and Saemonza force the monster to drop them, but they fall onto Turtle Team, with Anzu ordering Yuzu to move too late.

As Duck and Turtle Team apologize, and the former thanks the others for the rescue, Miho realizes they will have to be careful, having lost two tanks at once. At that point, Sodoko and the disciplinary committee have finished guiding the refugees, and asks for Miho's orders regarding the others. Miho tells the defeated crews to leave their vehicles and evacuate, while the others head from the marine tower to the maneuvering grounds, firing and avoiding tentacles all the way.

They reach the place the battle with St. Gloriana began, and Caesar is eager to begin the decisive battle, and Miho believes they can fight without damaging buildings. After a moment, though, Miho notices that Araipppe didn't follow them there, and Yukari is confused, having seen it following them until recently. Araippe descends from the sky, having used its tentacles to raise itself up. Rabbit Team frantically escapes, while Oryou notes she was surprised to see it use its tentacles in such a way. Caesar doesn't think it has any more surprises in store (one would think that she'd have learned from Yukari's mistake), until it blasts them with an unavoidable water spray, causing their tank to sink. The history club escapes their tank, but says they're no longer able to fight.

Now down to two tanks, the situation is looking bad for Oarai, and it seemingly goes From Bad to Worse when Rabbit Team goes forward, forcing Anglerfish Team to follow in spite of the danger. Rabbit Team reveals that they've been keeping a secret about Araippe, but said secret is not revealed at the moment.

At that point, Ami arrives with three Type 10 MBTs, declaring that "fighting Kaiju is the job of the JGSDF." With information from Miho about Araippe's abilities, Ami launches an effective attack, showing for the first time her skill in a tank. Of course, it's partly due to her having a much more powerful tank than Oarai's WWII-era tanks, and Miho and Yukari ponder how mankind's wisdom can face even an unknown enemy like this.

At this point, Saki runs out of her tank, prompting a horrified reaction from Anglerfish Team. Yuuki tries to tell them what they were about to say before about Saki. Saki reaches Araippe, and Ami, noticing her, demands a cease fire; she's too late, but Araippe shields Saki with a tentacle. Saki thanks Araippe and produces one of its young from her uniform.

As Araippe returns to the sea, they determine that the case is closed, since the monster was merely looking for its young, which Akebi describes as "cute." Yuuki says that Saki found the child on a beach, and Duck Team considered reporting it, but Karina says that it was only comfortable around Saki. Saki tears up, but Miho comforts her, and tells Yukari that what's more important than knowledge that surpasses the unknown is a heart that understands it.

At this point, the film ends, and a DVD case for a "Giant Araippe vs. Oarai Tank Company Master" is shown. Assam wonders what kind of movie they just watched, while Darjeeling describes it as a masterpiece, and is interested in seeing the extras. Orange Pekoe says they plan to show it during the Oarai film festival, and Darjeeling plans on doing something similar before the other two cut her off.

After the chapter, there are some pages promoting the movie and the Little Army sequel.

All in all, this was one of the best chapters, showing tank combat and a good deal of humor, while going beyond what the show had done until now.

Unfortunately, this is the last chapter for now. There aren't any new MLLSD chapters out that I know of, and the translation for the other series is apparently on hiatus in order to work on some series called "Trench Flowers." This is unfortunate, since I don't know or care much about "Trench Flowers," although I do realize that the scanlation group has many different projects.

In any case, thank you for reading this liveblog thus far, and I hope to see you again the next time a Girls und Panzer chapter comes out in English.

Next Installment: In stark contrast to the behemoth that attacked Oarai this chapter, Rabbit Team now faces a small but terrifying foe.

Araippe is Oarai's official mscot. This chapter is as meta as that old promo material of Oaraider teaming up with Miho.

Also,

MLLSD is not on hiatus - it's the only Gu P series that's still being translated as soon as it is released. Last chapter (Usagi team goes OPERATOR versus a fearsome [[spoilers:cockroach]]) was translated last week and is awaiting typesetting. (Just so you know).

As for Trench Flowers, thing is, it's a new series /ak/ was translating, but they had fallen too far behind (it's on chapter 7 yet no work had been done, yet) because of the large number of Gu P material (MLLSD, Maginot, Red Ribbon, and now Little Army 2) being usually their #2 priority, right after #1 (Upotte). You can reasonably expect translation to catch up in a month or so, if you are wondering.

erana,

To clarify, I said that the translation for the *other (Girls und Panzer) series* were on hiatus, not M Ll SD.

I see what you mean. I'm looking forward to new chapters being translated.

On a side note, I'd like to thank you and everyone else who commented; this liveblog has now surpassed my Team8 liveblog in terms of how many comments it's received.
