Quality Settles Upon Driftveil+Mistralton: Interest Level Peaking at Adequate/Mediocre

day 1904 they get to driftveil {bw57}

Plot stuff, Clay won't battle Ash until he runs an errand for him, which incidentally leads him to where TR are mucking around destroying sacred shrines and stuff. 57 also contains a Kamen Rider spoof, so even ignoring the forward momentum it can stand on its on well enough just for being funny.

58 however, does not move the plot along at all and is a bad filler besides. Chilli is being a whiny bitch and followed Cilan to driftveil leaving Cress to just do everything... also there's a bad spoof of Rocky. Let's move on.

59+60 is another good 2-parter that once again features Team Rocket + chronicles how Ash stops their latest plan to obtain the three legendairies. Not much to say, except that in the end the reason TR didn't get away with even one Pokémon was because Dr. Zager was afraid their helicopter was going to blow up; if he had just consulted the trio they would have warned him about Pikachu's extra strength bolts.

It really does boggle my mind though, how bifractured Ash has gotten this series. Right here and in the movie and in the Nimbasa 2-parter he's on top of his game, beyond that it's like he's on something that impairs his cognitive functions. It could be LSD or it could be that the writers kinda sorta regret setting Ash back to square one but can't exactly snap their fingers and reverse the damage all at once.

day 1907 ash gets 5th badge and roggenrola evolves into boldore {bw61}

A gym battle that I don't have any problems with? Oh wonder of wonders, only one more slightly stupid one to get through and that's coming up next. Boldore's one stone cold— I'll stop the pun there, but yeah he's kinda bad ass now. One last thing before I forget, Clay is Cowboy! Goku, much nicer than the evil one.

day 1909 cilan's dwebble evolves into crustle, ash finally catches that stalker krokorok {bw62-65}

I love it so much when multiple episodes happen in a single day, makes my job so much easier. 62+63 has Bianca and Pr. Juniper turn up again, showcasing the trade evolution between shelmet+karrablast, and TR stealing some electromagnetic rocks from chargestone cave.

64 has Pr. Juniper's father Cedric lead the group out of the cave and through a secret maze. Incidentally Cedric Juniper is voiced by original 4kids dub Pr. Oak, that threw me for a loop. Waiting at the end of the maze somehow is Krokorok who, after some shenanigans in 65 involving Pikachu 'blasting off' and being lost, finally gets caught. Gee 62 episodes after his intro, that was sure wrapped up quick wasn't it?

Remember how ep155 was a good filler where everybody got lost in the woods, became separated, and spent the day running from angry ursaring? Yeah, bw66 is like the stupid and bad version of that but with bouffalant instead, skip it.

day 1913 ash gets 6th badge, ash's tranquil evolves into unfezant {bw68}

They arrive in mistralton in bw67, and what the hell did they do to Skyla? Not since Erika in the OG have they retrofitted a gym leader into being such a tool. At least Volkner was fair when he gave up on his job, he gave everybody badges. Skyla though, figures out if an incoming trainer deserves a badge or not by imagining how the fight will go. It's like if the deciding factor was if she liked your face or not.

Not just Ash takes offense to this, as he's a gym leader Cilan won't stand for this either! So he challenges her before Ash can... then loses. Sorry about your one moment of awesome/development guy, but you're not the protagonist.

As should be expected, Ash beats some sense in to her. Honestly the battle was fine, but did Skyla have to be transfigured from a bubbly outdoorsy type, to a lazy disconnected bitch? With that out of the way, bw69 is a lead in to the next mini tournament, and excusing one big WTF moment + the now standard contrived ways in which Ash will never win a League + the completely superfulous post-season that only exists to while away the time to Kalos, the rest of Best Wishes ain't that bad. (That was far too many qualifiers)

Next time... "Great job Tepig, you evolved and worked past your abandonment issues, Now let's go out and help that sad little horsey" "DID YOU CALL ME A PINT-SIZED MIDGET!!- I mean hi I'm Keldeo" movie#15 and Eps 70-81

Honestly, if you need three big exceptions that all take multiple episodes, you really shouldn't be saying this generation is good. I also notice you fail to mention how stupid and contrived the Kamen Rider parody is, or how it takes an in-universe Memetic Badass and turns him into an Idiot Hero.

And what do you mean, "Ash is at the top of his game in the 15th movie"? All he did was stalk Keldeo. He didn't try to fight at all.

Point of order, grasping at straws with the Kamen Rider thing I'll admit that, but I wanted to at least say something positive, the exceptions thing was a joke as I sincrely do hate Best Wishes except for like... 6 episodes-ish and I meant the 14th movie(s) with Victini and the dragons. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Ah. And actually, that is unjustified hate for associating a reference with the rest of the generation.

I guess not everyone likes the Striaton Triplets, because I'm fine with them and so I don't dislike the episode (even if I think the 4-move thing is utterly contrived for the anime).

With Skyla, I don't have as much a problem as some other people do with her - she's not a completely hateable character to me, it's just that the idea is so bloody silly, which is why Volkner works better. It's like the writers wanted to go back to Kanto so much in terms of storytelling and arcs, without realising that not everything from Season One was good. That's why there's over 20 episodes between Gyms (similar to nearly episodes between Fuschia and Cinnebar in Season 1), or Skyla being like Erika in being bratty/immature given her job.

This is actually why I liked Clemont's arc from early XY so much - like Skyla, he wanted more free time from the Gym to do something he loves, but unlike her not only is his solution far less ridiculous, it's handled so much bloody better overall (which also helps Clem grow as a character and in likeability). Both people are well-meaning (which is what the writers are going for), both make mistakes which they're meant to be called on, but Clemont's is handled much better overall.

That said, I actually thought the battles with Skyla were structured reasonably well overall. Not the best, but better than some (especially that travesty with Elesa - talk about a total waste of potential!)

Personally, I would've had Cilan v Skyla end in a tie. This would dumbfound Skyla, ("Inconceivable!") and open her up to a "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Cilan. Granted, it would likely have prevented Ash's Gym Battle from happening until after the Clubsplosion, but we may have seen some Character Development as a result... yeah...

Regarding [up], maybe the BW writers were industry-standard hacks who only saw that "X was successful, so we should copy X"; whereas the XY crew are Promoted Fanboys (and girls) whose fan-views give them some insight as to "what works here and now."
