Season 1: Episodes 9 - 11

Episode 9 - The Waterbending Scroll

Poor Aang, already having a panic attack about having to learn everything in little more than a year

Uh oh, is Katara going to get Jealous that Aang is picking stuff up so quickly?

I just don't find Appa cute at all... he's kinda creepy actually.

Is that pirate wearing lipstick?

I'm guessing this Cabbage vendor is going to be a running gag?

Yep she's jealous of Aang's natural ability...

Its a sailboat Aang... put some wind in the sails geez is it that hard?

Why would they make a bison Whistle if Bison are supposedly extinct?

Episode 10 - Jet

Sokka is right... a giant flying Bison is kinda obvious...

Why don't they put their gear on Appa? Just because they aren't flying doesn't mean he cant be a pack mule...

So... Robinhood/Peter Pan type fellow, and he's chewing on a stick because a cigarette just wouldn't be appropriate I suppose.

You routed the fire kingdom guys but now you are just going to hang out in their camp? Ever heard of reinforcements?

I hope this old guy is actually a baddie and they aren't just roughing up an old guy for vengeance.. yup just roughing up an old guy...

Yay psychopathic kids, guess I cant blame them if they lost their parents to the fire nation... but still, a whole town? Murdering innocents is no way to go through life kiddo...

The fight in the trees between Aang and Jet was fairly impressive, Aang is still using a lot of evasion tricks instead of actually fighting back though.

She bends so much better when she's angry... and the ice thing is a new trick?

Episode 11 - The Great Divide

So I've been forewarned about the crappiness and canon breaking nature of this episode, I'm going to watch it anyway for completion's sake

So is this going to be an episode about them fighting over something stupid?

Slobs vs Metrosexuals? And why's this guy talking shit if he's on his lonesome?

Nice Katara... just dump it on Aang.. as if the kid doesn't already have enough shit on his plate.

Could these groups be any more ridiculously polar opposites?

Ahh and the two siblings way of doing things are being validated by their respective host tribe...

So who is telling the truth here?

I guess they didn't leave the old Earthbender guy behind...

Figure's that Aang's solution would be to ride something...

Ok... Aang is a liar, and the two tribes believed him WAY too easily but I really didn't think that the episode was THAT bad. A bit anvilicious with the moral but not terrible.

I honestly have to hand it to Aang for pulling that story out of his backside and telling it so sincerely. It was a fairly brilliant move on his part, considering all the other dumb stuff he's done.

And thats all for tonight, Ive felt shitty all weekend and I need some sleep...

Mostly the reason The Great Divide is so hated is that it feels like a regular kids' show, when already by this point the fans were expecting more and were right to do so. I cringe thinking that there were probably several people who kept telling their friends about this new cartoon that tackled mature subject matter and didn't talk down to the audience, and then had this be the next episode that aired.

So it probably wouldn't have had a bad reception if it had been played earlier on in the season? Up until The Winter Solstice episodes it followed that formula.

There's also the fact that the next two episodes, the Storm and the Blue Spirit, are both very big, important ones, and the fact that Great Divide is one of the only episodes that is pure filler, adding literally nothing noteworthy to the Myth Arc, worldbuilding, or characteriztion.

Yeah, combo of it being written WAY more kiddie and Anvilicious and being damn near the ONLY episode that in no way shape or form has ANY bearing on the plot and/or character development for someone, baring a Discontinuity Nod in the penultimate episode.

I've heard from sevral fans that there are two episodes that are skipped the most, That one, because it's useless and boring, and Appa's Lost Days, because of just how emotional and tearjerking it can be for some people.

FYI: Episodes that have absolutely no bearing on the overall plot:
  • The Great Divide.
  • Avatar Day, but it's still largely enjoyable.
  • Half of season 3, but it gets a pass for all the character building.

Well Avatar day doe show us the creation of Kyoshi Island, as well as a bit of insight into Avatar Kyoshi. And yeah a lot of Season 3 isn't really plot relevant, between episodes, but it's mostly showing either CD or exploring more of the Fire Nation. only one i can think of that totally skippable is The Painted Lady

I never got the hate for The Great Divide myself. It's not a bad episode. It's at least worth it to see the 3 unique art styles it shifts into during the story segments.

And Aang turning into Elmer Fudd during his meltdown at the end.

At least Rene Auberjonois was able to come back to the show as a much better character.

Really it's a lot like the hate for MMDW among bronies, it's not "bad" by any objective standard, it's just not up to same quality as the rest of the show.

Lets put it thus way: "The Great Divide" is the WORST ATLAB has to offer. And it's still better than the average kids show.
