In which our journey begins

So here we are again! Sorry for the unbearable wait, but hey, that's the postal system for you. Anyway, since this is our first time, I figured I'd watch the opening cutscene (probably some spoilers in there, so watch at your own risk). I'm already liking what I see, especially since apparently the dog on the cover of the game is a party member. Somehow. Anyway, our opening screen lets us choose between "The Journey" and "The Answer". As The Answer takes us to the playable epilogue-thingy, I ignored that option and went with "The Journey." If you have any Journey songs you want to play at this instance, now's the time.

After a bit of stuff explaining what's new in the FES edition, we're asked to pick our difficulty. Now, since I'm an absolute wimp and I know how punishing this series can be, I'm going to be playing on EASY difficulty. Mostly this just makes the battles a bit easier and gives you up to 10 continues when you die. So, with that out of the way, we're greeted with some ominous text and a picture of the Full Moon. Also a busy street and some student. I presume this is our main character. There are also shots of some girl in a pink vest. Seems she's about to commit suicide while some snouted creatures watch. Fun times! But wait, it seems she doesn't have the guts to do so. Good thing too, since she's probably a main character.

We cut to our protag on a train, with shots of a butterfly in between. But as he gets off the train, the clock hits midnight and strange things happen. Power cuts abound and the city takes on an eerie look. This doesn't seem to shock MC, as he keeps on walking through... rows of coffins. Huh. That's new. He then arrives at a building (I presume this is the school), only to be accosted by some creepy child who wants him to sign some contract.

And so we reach our naming place. As you lot couldn't bear all the bear puns (yes, this is your punishment for making me change it), we're going with the canon name of Minato Arisato (and yes, I did get the order right). Upon doing this, the creepy kid appears again, ominously telling us that we can't escape time. Creeeepy! Then he faces away and we're accosted by the girl from the cutscene. She seems to want to attack us, but is stopped by some redhead who seems to think that having one eye covered by hair makes her seem mysterious.

And with that we're out of beautiful cutscene and into actual gameplay. The redhead (whose name is Mitsuru Kirijo) introduces herself to us and confirms that this is a dorm for students. Seems we're a transfer student, sent at the last minute. The plot thickens! For some reason the brunette/suicide girl is worried about us being here. Probably the monsters and coffins hanging around. Mitsuru shrugs off the question and introduces us to the opening cutscene girl, who is apparently called Yukari Takeba. Seems we're in the same year as well. And thus we find our first dialogue option. We can say it's nice to meet her, ask about the gun or about the girl's dorm. As Minato seems to have a weirdness censor powerful enough to be oblivious to all the coffins, we go with option 1.

Anyway, Mitsuru helpfully points out how late it's getting and sends us off to our dorm. Seems our things arrived before us as well. Yukari is helpful enough to show us the way. On an unrelated note, these dorms are swanky as hell. Seriously, it looks more like a mansion than a student dorm. Anyway, Yukari gets us to our destination with a warning to never lose our key. 'Kay. Another dialogue option springs up here, letting us choose whether or not to ask about the contract or the kid. Since that ghost-kid gives me the creeps, let's ask about him!

Knew it! Kid's a ghost, since apparently Yukari has no idea about any such kid. Then again, she may just be feigning ignorance. Maybe she's a ghost whisperer or something. I'm onto you, Ghost-friend! But hey, seems she knows about the big old coffins and power cuts. We ask her what she means, only to be given that age old annoying answer, "Never mind." And with that cryptic conversation, she leaves us, but not before telling us to save whatever questions we might have for later. Yeah, whatever. I'll find your secrets out another day, incorporeal mingling person.

Right, I'll split this update here, since it's getting rather long, so I hope you enjoy and I'll get a new part up a little later!

Yep. The dog's a party member. More about him when we get to him.

The posh dorm for the posh people! (And there's some cool background music later)

Don't worry. You'll see creeeepy ghost kid later. -laughs-

If I remember right, the orginal opening appears if you linger too long on the decision stage. With some more spoilerific stuff on it. Atlus seems to have grown fond of these over the years.

Actually, the original opening didn't seem that spoilerific at all unless you already know the game's plot.
