The Paladin's Trial

Deeper into the Ruins. DEEPER!

...You know, they don't really look that ruined.

First is a floor that looks kinda like the path to the Feymarch. There's forced encounters here, instead of random ones. And, of course, damage tiles make their triumphant, aggravating return. We find Apollo's Rod at the end, which I guess is for Palom as Rydia can't equip it.

Next up is a teleporter maze. Lovely. Not only that, but one that changes the destination of the teleporters every time we screw up. We do, however, find Sasuke's Katana, obviously for Edge.

Once we make our way out of that hellhole, we find ourselves in a town. All the stuff they sell is old, though, and the inn is 1050 Gil, which is a complete ripoff. We still use it, though, because we have more money than we'll ever need.

Next up is the next trial, and with Baron's theme playing, this must be Cecil's. In we go!

???: A paladin...

Cecil: Who's there?

???: If you are a true paladin, you may pass. Are you a true paladin? You must prove yourself. I'll be waiting for you, paladin.

Cecil's trial contains 5 randomly selected tests. Do them all in the most paladin-y nature (As in being courageous, honest and generally a nice person, not being Lawful Stupid), and we get the bast reward.

The first test is a room with a vase.

Cecil: Where am I? ...Hm? I wonder what's in that vase.

Cecil approaches the vase and completely wrecks it. An old man walks in.

Hey!

Cecil: !?

Wh-who broke my vase? I treasured it more than my life! Was it you!?

Yes. And you need mental help.

Heh heh. Thank you for your honesty. Everything breaks eventually.

The second test is a shop or something being looted by a thief.

Heh heh! Loot! Loot! I made a bundle today! I was born to be a burglar! !? Uh-oh! I didn't know anyone else was here! Oh well... What's it to you, anyway? You'll keep quiet, right?

Hey, I'M the only one allowed to loot chests around here. No way.

He fights us, but he's no big deal.

The third test is a castle in the middle of battle.

Ahhh! Hey, you! Can you give us a hand?

Sure. Luckily, the Armored Fiends we have to fight are old enemies. And we get pre-emptive strikes on all of them. Defeating all three gives us a pass on this test.

The fourth test is a room with a chest and a soldier.

Soldier: Hey, you there!

Cecil: Yes?

Soldier: I need to ask you a favor. I need to pick something up. Would you mind taking my place while I run an errand?

Cecil: Certainly.

Soldier: Thank you so much! I'm very grateful! Please make sure no one gets near the treasure chest, okay? Don't tell anyone, but it contains a legendary holy sword. Don't let anyone near it. I'm only asking you because you seem very trustworthy!

We now have to stay still for a long time. That sword's probably just an Excalibur or something anyway. No big deal.

Soldier: I'm back! I really appreciate this. Thanks a lot! Good luck with your journey!

The fifth and final test is atop a mountain. An old man approaches a gravestone.

This is the Megalixir that was so dear to you. I'll put it here. If you have this with you in heaven, I won't have to worry about you. Sleep well...

He puts it down and leaves. The answer here is to just leave.

That's it, I guess it's time to see the Lunar Eidolon.

It's a king, so it's either Leviathan or Odin. Considering it's Cecil's trial, I'm guessing Odin.

???: Show me you are worthy of being a paladin. First, I shall grant you a weapon. Take what is in the box.

He gives us the Lightbringer! Guaranteed to max out Attack, has a Speed boost and randomly casts Holy when used to attack. And the Ragnarok seemed broken.

If you mess up at any point, the sword gets weaker, if you fail more tests than you pass, you get one of the Dark Swords, which, of course, you can't equip.

Next, we talk to that king again.

Lunar Odin: Now you must show me what you can do!

Odin. Called it. Lunar Odin is, well, Lunar Odin. Zantetsuken hurts hard, and we've got roughly 10 turns before he uses Zantetsuken twice in a row, guaranteed to wipe us out. We cast Slow on him, then beat him up. There is an easier way to kill him, but I didn't get far enough in his attack pattern to do it. We get Summon Book LO afterwards.

Lunar Odin: The power of light... Paladin... you are worthy!

Cecil: It's over...

We leave the trial. No ability change for Cecil, although his Attack command could probably be renamed Break the Game.

Next time, another trial. Considering this party, it should be obvious who's next.

Figures that you're given a good White Mage weapon right after Rydia could have used it...at least, I think that she could've went back to using staves as a child. And on a completely different note, although it was clearly just a test, why would anyone cherish a Megalixer? Sure, they're useful and a tad hard to acquire, but I wouldn't place one on my mantlepiece.

Anyways, it looks like you're making wonderful progress, and are prepared for any challenges you've yet to face. Please continue your excellent work, good sir!

Most equipment in the Lunar Ruins is character exclusive, AFAIK, so I probably wouldn't be able to give it to Rydia if I wanted to. Either way, after the next trial, I have to head back to Mysidia, so we'll see who can equip what.

Cecil's trial has some strange scenarios. There are 11 I know of, including a battle with a Goblin that pleads for mercy, hunting down Chocobos, and another of those waiting scenarios but with things actually trying to distract you. Obviously, it is just meant to test Cecil's virtues as a Paladin, but something a bit more logical would have done the job.
