Well, it's time to head even further east! Rydia learns Stop and Rosa learns Cura on the way to our destination. We eventually reach the castle of Fabul, and we remove Rosa's equipment before going in. The shop in Fabul has some more of Yang's claws, as well as the Demon equipment for Cecil, some very nice armour.

We head for the top of the western tower. Here, Yang introduces us to his wife, Sheila. She seems nice. In the eastern tower, we find a dancer with her back turned to us.

You wanna see my dance?

I can't see anything wrong with this.

The dancer turns into a monk. Did I mention all the monk sprites are male? Because they are. Cecil sums it up quite well;

Cecil: What the...?

The monk dances around a bit then turns back into a dancer lady. Disturbing.

One Brain Bleaching later...

OK, let's go see the king.

King: Yang, at last.

Yang: Sire, we must prepare for battle. Baron will attack us at any second to steal our Crystal.

King: How do you know this?

Yang: These two are citizens of Baron. They came to warn us.

King: And these others?

Cecil: Sir, we haven't much time. The castle's defences must be tightened immediately.

King: Yang, can we trust this dark knight and his companions?

Yang confirms that we are trustworthy, and then Edward speaks up, and the king does realise we are telling the truth. Why would the prince of Damcyan lie to him?

King: Prince Edward, dark knight, will you help us defend Fabul?

Um, yeah.

Yang: They have already offered to help, sire. We will join the forward guards by the main gate.

King: Very well. Will the ladies assist our medic?

Sure, we won't need healing. We ready ourselves to fight of Baron's forces. We go to the front gate.

Here they come!

First is a Captain and two Baron Marines, which is like a stronger fight to that one Cecil had in Kaipo. The rest are repeat crap enemies, so I'll just go for the story here.

Once we beat battle one...

The Red Wings!

They start bombing us. We retreat indoors.

Yang: We are severely outnumbered. I regret involving you all.

Cecil: This is our war, too. And it's far from over.

Edward: They're coming!

Fight 2. Afterwards, monsters start setting the monks on our side on fire, so we have to retreat again, upstairs.

Cecil: Isn't the throne room just behind us!? We must hold them here!

Yang: The king has already retreated to a safe place, along with the women and children. It is our duty to lure the enemy away... And crush them!

Badass. Fight 3. We get surrounded again, so we have to retreat. Again. At least we can lock the door. Except one of the monks unlocks the door.

Yang: You fool! What are you doing!?

It's a monster. Fight 4. And 5. We try to retreat to the Crystal Chamber, but Edward trips. Useless person... Fight 6. We finally get to the Crystal Chamber, and someone comes after us.

Kain: It's been a while.

Kain?

Not Quite Dead count: Kain: 1

Cecil: Kain! You're alive!

Kain: So it would seem.

Cecil: I wish to hear everything. But we are on the eve of battle. Are you ready to fight?

Kain: Indeed. But are you ready to face me, Cecil?

What the hell are you talking about?

Kain: Ready your sword!

Cecil: Kain!?

Kain: Ready you sword, fool!

We enter battle.

Cecil: Why!?

Kain: Save your breath.

He Jumps on us for a little damage.

Cecil: What's going on!?

Kain: Heh heh.

He Jumps on us again, hard enough to KO us.

Cecil: You must be under Golbez's spell!

Kain: Have you any final words?

Yang: Stop!

???: No!

Rosa and Rydia run in.

Kain: Rosa!

Rosa: Kain... You, of all people...

Kain: No, I...

???: Why do you hesitate, Kain?

Hear this music? That's the sound of us being completely screwed.

A heavily armoured man walks in.

Edward: Golbez!

Cecil: So you're Golbez...!

Golbez: Cecil, I presume? Never hesitate to kill, Kain. Now see how it is done!

Edward and Yang try to stop him.

Golbez: I did not come to treat with worms.

He knocks them both down in one blast.

Golbez: Kain! Enough of this foolishness. Bring me the Crystal.

Kain: My lord.

Kain heads for the Crystal.

Rosa: Kain, please!

Cecil: No, Rosa!

Kain: !

Cecil: Rosa, no...

Golbez: Oh, you care for this one, do you? Then let me take her along as well... to hold in trust until we are graced with the chance to meet again. Come, Kain!

Golbez grabs Rosa, Kain grabs the Crystal, and they both leave.

Kain: And you won't be so lucky next time.

Cecil: Wait... Rosa!

Well, that went quite poorly. Rydia heals us up and we lament how badly that went.

Rydia: So come on! We have to go help Rosa, and bring back the Crystal, too!

Rydia, once again, doesn't lament anything. After all that, we can go and find the one piece of Demon equipment we couldn't buy, the Demon Shield.

We get to stay at the inn free tonight, so we can figure out what to do.

Cecil: To fight Golbez, we need an airship. But Baron is the only kingdom that has them.

Yang: Then we must sneak into Baron and borrow one ourselves.

I like your style, Yang. Cecil reveals that Baron has a bad navy, so we can get in by sea. Yang will ask for a ship in the morning. Cecil also explains the situation with Kain. We might be able to find out what happened in Baron.

The next morning, we talk to the king.

King: I see. I will arrange for a ship right away. Yang, accompany and assist Cecil. Cecil, take this sword. It belonged to a dark knight who came to Fabul many years ago. The sword exudes tremendous force, but it is still a weapon of darkness. Can darkness prevail over true evil...? I would like to believe that you will slay Golbez, But perhaps it is but a mere wish...

We get the Deathbringer, which inflicts instant KO on a target. One enemy between now and Cecil's next weapon is vulnerable to instant KO. It still kills everything that isn't a zombie anyway and raises his Strength, Speed, Stamina and Intellect. It also has one crippling penalty, which is that it has, I think, -5 Spirit. Either way, it's gonna be 0 for a while.

We check up on Sheila, who fought off Baron's forces with a frying pan. I see awesome just comes naturally to the people of Fabul.

That's all for now. Next time, we get on a boat.

So here comes Darth Vader Golbez. You have to hand it to the man : he knows how to make an entrance. Totally sells the "completely out of our league" feeling. Even his (awesome) theme tune brings the point home : dude is bad news and we're not ready to face him in a straight fight at all.

This is a really well-put-together sequence, which allows Fabul to be very badass and still get mowed down by Baron's forces. (My only regret is that Edward spent most of the fight scenes cowering in a corner, being completely useless. Thank gods his days in the party are numbered...)

Edward can actually be decent in this sequence, as his attacks inflict confuse nearly every time. However, I didn't take advantage of that, as I had auto battle on. Also, his tripping while running to the Crystal Chamber is unforgivable.

Ah yes, you're nearing the part where Cecil goes solo for a bit. Shouldn't be too hard with the Deathbringer and all.

Yeah, solo for 10 steps on the world map. With the only threatening enemy so vulnerable to instant KO that it happens around 90% of the time.

I'm sure I'll be fine.

See, Yang has awesome plot moments not just as a combatent. Also, isn't the area after Cecil gets new party members crawling with undead? Undead which are resistent to dark based attacks such as what Cecil uses.

Yes, but he's no longer solo at that point, and one of the new party members can just set the undead on fire.
