Well, took us a while to get here, but here we are! Gameplay! We first go in the unit managing screen to take our first look at Destin. Our rebellion currently consists of one squad of 5 dude. The one with the spear is a Valkyrie, the three identical ones are soldiers. First order of business, put Destin in the front row. We'll move a soldier in the back for that, where he can be even more useless than soldiers usually are. See Destin's screen? It lists the attacks he will use, and three slice attack beat a single use of iainuki any time of the week. Iainuki is a single target attack that does terrifying amount of damage, but also causes some damage to the unit doing it. But it doesn't beat the damage of three slices from Destin. Now, the world map offers us one destination: "Castle of Warren". So let's go see the old fart...

Scene 1

This nice little site MOBQ has pretty maps for me to link. So here Yellow names are hidden towns. Red Dots are hidden treasure. Each town we free gives us some exposition. Either gameplay tips, or story related. I will only transcribe the latter. Freeing towns also lets us draw a tarot card. This gives a small stat boost or penalty to the unit who freed the town. The music for the stage is the awesome "Thunder":

There are no enemies on this map, beside Warren the stage boss. So we can take our time. We will go free towns. We need to make sure to visit the hidden town of Zeltenia, for there a surprise awaits us...

My name is Lans... I am a knight of the Royal Zenobian Army. You must be the new leader Warren was talking about. I must say, I like the look in your eyes... We have lived until this day only to see the wasteful death of King Gran avenged. I believe that at your side we just may be able to do that. I hereby pledge my allegiance to you! We will fight with you until the Zenobian Empire is crushed, and true peace returned to this land!

And with that we both net our second squad, and our first special character: Lancelot "Lans" Hamilton. A unique knight, Lans is quite the powerhouse that will form an integral backbone of our army. Players of Tactic Ogre are also free to squee at the first appearance of Lans Hamilton, whose apperance triggers that game.

An annoying factor, the game is inconsistent on the empire's name. The empire is supposed to be the Zeteginean Empire, with Zenobia being a part of it. But the game has a nasty habit of mixing up the names of Zenobia and Zetegina.

Next we keep freeing the towns around the map. Daskania nets us a V: Hierophant Card and a +2 alignment bonus to Destin. Zeltenia nets us a I: Magician card, and a bonus of +1 to intelligence. The Roshian Temple lands us a V: Devil card, and our reputation takes a 1 point hit. Ouch.

I deploy Lans to pick up the treasures, netting us a "Pirate's helm" a crappy helmet giving a tiny boost to a unit's physical defense (guess it beat getting slapped in the face) and a magnificent "Liebel's Rod" a staff that gives +14 intelligence. An untyped bonus is that Liebel also changes the melee attack of the character weilding it to "White" element, rather than physical. As it just so happens that Warren is vulnerable to white magic (Being a wizard), Destin takes temporary custody of the staff to use it to bash Warren's head in. Next, to the man's own lair: Volzak!

Warren is waiting for us.

It seems you have prepared for the battle ahead... You must now do battle with me! If you manage to defeat me, we will all follow you... Let's do it!

And for the first time we hear that classic sound "Fight it Out!" This battle... well it's a joke. Warren is alone with no escort. Bastard has 102 hp, more than even Destin, but not enough to avoid getting his skull caved in by Destin weilding Liebel's rod. It's not a fight, it's an execution. Warren is taken out before Destin even goes for his second attack.

Warren has more to say

You have done well and all now know your power.
Ah yes. All will fear my ability to beat the ever loving crap out of old men when outnumbering them 5 to 1! TREMBLE BEFORE ME!
Our fate now lies in your hands, Destin.
No pressure.
Now we shall fight togheter until the Zenobian empire is brought to it's knees!

Liberating Volzak nets us 6748 goths (the game's money, not a big crowd of people in dark clothing) and adds Warren to our roster of units. Warren is incidently the only special character that you are garanteed to recruit in the game. He's a unique wizard, and has NO further impact on the story once he joins you. Still, cool beans anyway.

Now, we've ganged up on and beaten the living crap of a lone old man. Truly our rebellion is off to a nice start! The stuff of legends!

Next time: We organize an army, and Lans has some personal business to deal with.

I actually lost to Warren the first time I played this game. No joke. Albeit losing simply propels you away from the enemy, but it was still embarrassing.

Also, it's nice to see Lans again. His fate in LUCT is pretty sad, though. Not sure if that counts as a spoiler.

Well the nature of MOTBQ's boss battles makes it easy to "loose" to Warren, since the default victory conditions arent normal. And if you have a Lord other than the NG default one, it can be likely for that to happen. But the main thing is, Warren's unlikely to make you suffer casualties. Just gotta be careful if he decides to hit Destin though.

Squeee! ...Uh, sorry for that completely unmanly outburst, but I must admit that I truly admire Lans' traits and personality. Good to have him on the team. Warren's a good man, too; they say you should respect your elders, and considering that he survives a war or two and has enough resources to compile data on freakin' EVERYTHING in LUCT...

Anyways, this was a good introduction to the actual 'gameplay', and I hope to see more updates soon.
