A minor whinnyintroduction

Why, hello!

If four years ago you had told me the Internet would be flooded by My Little Pony, out of all things, I'd have laughed, yet look at it now. You can't walk two steps without bumping into some colorful cartoon pony, staring at you with it's big bright eyes. Ponies are literally everywhere. Name a website, any website, chances are it'll have some sort of brony community among it's userbase, no matter how unlikely it seems.

To be fair, I've never really "gotten" this whole brony thing. It's not that I think kid's shows can't be good, mind you, being an avid cartoon fan myself, it's just that the way fans talk about it, it might as well be the Citizen Kane of Western Animation. That, and a community revolving around cartoon horses is bound to get funny looks. But eh, it's okay bronies, I've seen much weirder things on the Internet.

Nonetheless, after two and a half years of going against the brony horde, I've finally given in: I'm going to watch the show. After all, if so many people like it, there must be something good about it, right?

I already know a few things about the show, mainly thanks to Popcultural Osmosis and catching "Friendship Is Magic, Part One" on TV this one time (It was okay, but it didn't quite "woo" me, so to speak. I'll be rewatching it for this liveblog, anyway). I know the setting: The little town of Ponyville, in the kingdom of Equestria. I know the main characters: Twilight Sparkle the bookworm, her dragon assistant Spike, the haughty Rarity, the hyper Pinkie Pie, the Shrinking Violet Fluttershy, the tomboyish daredevil Rainbow Dash, and Applejack the country bumpkin, who has a southern accent and wears a cowboy hat. And is a silly pony. This automatically makes her a gajillion times better than the other six. I also know some other characters, such as Princess (Not Queen, for some reason) Celestia the ruler, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders, but I digress.

In this liveblog, I'll comment in snarky, amusing ways on the show's episodes as I go watching them. First there'll be a Recap section, where I'll explain the events of the episode, and then a Review section, where I'll give my opinion it. Episodes that I find particularly good or entertaining will get a Silly Pony Seal Of Approval.

I'll try to update this thing at least once a week, but I'm not making any promises. In fact, I don't even promise that I won't automatically forget about this and never update it again. Yes, I'm that kind of person.

But, without further ado, this ponytastic liveblog is officially inaugurated!

Will I stay apathetic, or will the ponies win me over? ALL ABOARD THE PONY TRAIN! CHOO CHOO!

(P.S.: Whoever says "Welcome to the herd" gets his shizzle slapped!)

You may want to consider doing these more often than once a week. At the one-per-week rate, you have nearly two years of work cut out for you. Just a suggestion.

Trust me, the show doesn't get good till later. In fact, you don't really have to watch most of the episodes in order anyway {Unless it's a two-parter}, so if you want you could just skip around to whichever episode sounds more interesting until you either get into FIM or give up on it.

^^Most likely, I'll just do the first season, anyway (Which is already quite a lot, but at least I won't be bored for a few months).

In that case, may I recommend also doing the 2-part opening to Season 2? It was originally planned for Season 1, before getting pushed back, and it makes for a better conclusion to the season than the actual finale imo.

I agree with Gold, the Return of Harmony was my favorite episode by far.

Also welcome to the herd.

And yeah, the premier, well decent wasn't really anything amazing. Well other then the climax, that part was just freaking awesome. It's a great set up, but overall, it's just an average episode for the show.

And well hopefully you'll get so into it you'll want to do the whole show, and faster. For most Season 2 is the best of the lot, though so far Season 4 has been off to a great start. ESPECIALLY with the animation. You think the season 1 animation looks good? Just wait.

My reaction to this episode was pretty much the same as yours. I thought it was fine, but it didn't do anything to really wow me. Given that it was a two-parter, I did decide to give it the benefit of watching both halves before I made up my mind, and that turned out to make all the difference.

Looking back, though, I can really appreciate this very first episode for managing quick, concise introductions and establishing character moments for seven main characters in the span of 20-some minutes without feeling rushed, which laid the groundwork for their development in later episodes.

One other note, and sorry for the grammar nitpick, but it's a pet peeve of mine: "it's" is the contracted form of "it is," not the possessive form of "it." "Its" is the possessive form.

Happy viewing!

I know this was a little more than half a month ago, but, eh. One thing I heard when watching the San Diego Comic Com panel thing on Season 2 Disc 4 in the Bonus Features section is that the VA for Spike originally thought he was more of a baby, so you may notice that he'll sound a little older fairly soon. Whether you'll find that better or worse...
