Those Who Did, Teach

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
There's a saying that "those who can, do, those who can't, teach." However, very often a teacher or trainer has the wisdom of experience.

Is This Tropeable?

Examples:

Professional Wrestling
  • A number of wrestling schools are run by retired professional wrestlers.

Veteran Instructor is a subtrope of this.

MASH: Charles encourages a wounded soldier, who until his wound was a concert pianist, to continue using his gift in any way he can including teaching.

Drill Sergeant Nasty, almost by definition, would also be a subtrope.

I think the Veteran Instructor can nice cover anything this trope might cover. A veteran doesn't necessarily have to be a soldier type. Truly, I'd like to see an example or subcategory that isn't Veteran Instructor.

Isn't this just Veteran Instructor, but more specific?

The only difference between this and Veteran Instructor is that most of the examples under Veteran Instructor are military. Personally, I'd vote for expanding Veteran Instructor to include nonmilitary examples.

Yeah, Veteran just means someone is an old hand, and well experienced at something, it doesn't mean just experienced only in military service. I vote to expand it beyond the "just military" restriction.

The way it is described on its own page, Veteran Instructor seems to be specifically about military training people other than Drill Sergeant Nasty. Probably that trope could just be broadened a bit.

^That's what my driving examiner said when the ambulance came to pick him up.

If someone thinks that we'd be better off expanding Veteran Instructor, then go ahead and do it. Basically, this is Veteran Instructor, but less specific.
