Proud Beauty

They know they're unusually attractive, and flaunt it.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Previously Prideful Beauty.

Per this discussion, we thought it might be appropriate to expand and split Big Breasts, Big Deal into more generalized tropes.

See also:
A character who is beautiful, well aware of the effect they have on other people, and is proud of it.

Regardless of the exact nature of a character's attractive appearance, some characters decide that if they've got an advantage, they might as well use it. A character who follows this trope is proud of their physical attractivenesss and view their physical form as a means to get what they want. Such characters are prone to parading their "assets" in the presence of company of appropriate gender and orientation, sometimes with a little extra bounce in their step, and may often brag about their appearance unknowingly in front of less fortunate, usually younger or self-conscious characters. Unlike more prim and proper characters, they will generally enjoy distracted admirers staring at them, as it makes them feel good about themselves.

    • Rangiku Matsumoto from Bleach, who flaunts her beauty in the sporadic comedy moments of the show. She's the Bleach character with the most online artwork anyway.
    • Milly from Code Geass is the most endowed of the entire cast, and is also the commanding class rep of Ashford Academy to which she uses to full effect.

I think I remember reading about this somewhere already. It's pretty common, so I suggest looking again just in case.

I don't think Milly counts. Her looks are incidental to her position.

Presumably this is a less malicious version of The Vamp? Looks like there might be quite a bit of overlap with it. I think there would also be an overlap with I Have Boobs You Must Obey, Screw The Rules Im Beautiful, and the deliberate sort of Favors For The Sexy. Also, maybe it's just me, but when I read "prideful" that immediately suggested "arrogant" in a bad way, rather than a "gorgeous and proud of it" good way. I think "proud" might have similar problems. Maybe Beautiful And Proud Of It might be less ambiguous?

I agree that Milly doesn't really use her looks to boost her position much; even though her later job as a journalist might have been helped by her looks she doesn't seem to actively use them (unless there's something in the picture dramas or sub that makes it clear that she does? I only watched the dub).

One example which I think does fit though; in the theatre production of The Producers, Ulla has a song called "If you've got it, flaunt it", and she does clearly use her looks to her advantage, but not callously enough to make her The Vamp

"I don't think Milly counts. Her looks are incidental to her position."

Yeah, it's an Averted Trope, and doesn't really belong here.

    • Ranma 1/2's titular character is a unique male variant, thanks to his girl half. When splashed with cold water, Ranma becomes a buxom redhead, and quite the looker. Tatewaki Kuno became smitten with "her" after their first duel, which Ranma uses to solicit favors from him. Not only that, but he's even used his girl form to get free eats from street vendors, or to distract opponents, during matches, by flashing them!
      • Nabiki Tendo is considered hot by her classmates and has had several suitors, and shamelessly fleeces all of them for everything they're worth before dumping them. Or, she simply leaves them once she has grown bored with them.

    LITERATURE
    • In Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, the Bertram sisters are really aware of being attractive. They are both beautiful and from a baronet's family, and they plan to marry well because of it.

The Miss Bertrams were now fully established among the belles of the neighbourhood; and as they joined to beauty and brilliant acquirements a manner naturally easy, and carefully formed to general civility and obligingness, they possessed its favour as well as its admiration. Their vanity was in such good order that they seemed to be quite free from it, and gave themselves no airs.

      • Their mother, Lady Bertram, values beauty greatly as well, and thinks every pretty woman should use it to make an advantageous match.
Narrator: She had been a beauty, and a prosperous beauty, all her life; and beauty and wealth were all that excited her respect.

I think this is common for fairytale princesses. I could be added to a trope description, no?

    LITERATURE/FOLKLORE
    • Brothers Grimm's Fairytales
      • King Thrushbeard A beautiful, but spoiled, rude, and shallow princess criticizes all her suitors because she is too proud.

    • Punished Pride from Bozena Nemcova's Collection of Czech Fairytales: Princess Krasomila is way too proud of her beauty and accomplishments and wants only a superior suitor. She slights King Miroslav who is not beautiful enough for her. He then pretends to be a servant and she falls in love with him though she feels greatly humiliated by it.

    • Czech film Proud Princess based on Nemcova's fairytale.

^ All that says is that women find that person attractive not that they're proud of that. Proper context is important.
